Helped the 100 year old lady by swapping the hinges on her fridge and installing all the shelves. My good deed for the day.
She wanted to pay me and I didn't want her money, so I had to back away while a 100 year old lady tried to stuff money in my pants...
Wait... That sounds dirty. Is it cleaner if I say my wife was there watching?
The most significant lesson I've learned over the last decade or so was to let people do things for me... especially if it is in response to something I gave for them... it gives them the same jolt of joy I get when I give.... but never money.
A lady across street fell this past summer, in her back yard.. I a was doing yard work and thought I heard something before I fired up the tractor... then again before I fired push mower... then again with weed eater.... between weed eater and leaf blower I decided I wasn't crazy and went to investigate. She was lucky because after the leaf blower comes beer. Copious amounts of beer.
She was crawling and in her side yard before I got to her... good thing she wasn't in a race as she would have needed headlights before she arrived at her door... it was likely around lunch time when this was happening.
She's north of 90 years old. Has family but some distance away, and though active in church her cell phone was indoors.
After poking around searching for broken bones I felt safe enough to scoop her up and carry her inside. I asked her to call her friend to come check on her and perhaps give her a better look than I could or would. Didn't rule out a trip to the zoo er uh hospital for her... this was mid covid scare and if you wanted to put fear of God in an older person, mention a trip to the hospital...
So anyway she, her friend, and her family all wanted to pay me... for doing the only thing there is to do in a situation like that... but they wanted to carry no debt- which is the lesson I had learned some time prior to that- so.... I asked for a pie... a cheesecake, actually... and... she brought me one... she's brought me several since.. ive taken to using the sweeper attachment to clear leaves from her yard and taking her trash to the corner... and she loves my little girl and teaches her- turns out she was a teacher in her professional life, and my little girl has a thirst for learning as heavy as the ladys thirst to teach... I'd call her friend.
And I figure that's how you make them.
Doesn't always work out that way. Old fella who used to live across street was a doctor in WWII to give indication of his age... he introduced himself to me at least five times... tried to be nice to him several times, but he was a straight ass hole. And.... he never learned what I feel proud to have gained- gotta let people do things for you just like you do for them.... never money.
