It's weird how much a name adds $$$.  Any NFL vet can do that job, at least the personable ones can.  But random OL X isn't famous.  So they're saying they get more eyeballs due to name recognition.

What kind of football fan is watching due to name recognition of the announcer?  All of it is absurd.

Agree with the name recognition part, disagree with the part about any NFL vet can do the job.  Several have tried and aren't good at it.  Not because they're not names, and I'd say not because they're not personable, but because they're not good at providing engaging commentary that moves the broadcast along and gives fan-level insights to the plays.

And quite frankly, I don't think Tom Brady is very good at it.

He's better than when he first started, but that really only speaks to how bad he was his first season.  FOX bumped Greg Olsen for him, and that was a tragic mistake.  Olsen is way, way better at that job than Brady.

If Olsen did go to ESPN to replace Aikman on MNF for a big contract to be "the guy" for a network, he'd deserve it.

Isn't that the other guy's job?

I guess to an extent, but it's usually the color commentator who provides breakdowns of plays in a hopefully-digestible way for the average viewer.

Jason Witten is a prime example of a former player who wasn't good at it.  Tom Brady and JJ Watt aren't good at it now, though neither is as bad as Witten was.

I don't know why I care as much about broadcast teams as I do, but it bugs me when they're subpar.  It's even more annoying when people don't seem to know or care that they're subpar, and they're still popular because they're big-name former players.

I usually mute those guys because they are subpar
I enjoyed Tony Romo - even though I didn't like him as a player (Cowboy)
Aikmen stutters too much
Joe Buck is a douche living off his father's legacy - Jack was great

I probably have a different standard in that I mostly care about how much they entertain me--which is subjective--vs. a particular broadcasting skill set--which is more objective.

I like Buck and Aikman okay.  Not always particularly insightful, but I've always found Aikman's leftover concussion ramblings entertaining in a "bless your heart" kinda way.

I rarely notice what the announcers are saying.  I noticed yesterday a couple of times they called a pass a great catch when the ball had clearly come loose and was bouncing away from the receiver, and then they caught it seconds later, I understand it can happen, but this was clear on TV.  I guess they don't watch TV.  Sometimes they are bathering on when there was a penalty of some relevance and they talk about how great X is at his position, no, tell us the penalty.  That is about the only time I listen very hard to what they are saying if it's not shown on the TV.

Oh, there's a flag.  Harbey Modd made a great play, did you see that?

Compare any writing on the ESPN site with just about any "analysis" around here, the stuff here is far better and more insightful/interesting.  Well, it used to be, I stopped reading that guff.  Gameday turned into a clown show a decade or more back, I stopped even having the TV on that channel.  I think this site has raised our standards.

I’ve only caught snippets of the Aikman-Buck feud. As with much on the internet, I don’t put much stock into vague references and reports.

Care to explain the feud?
