I guess to an extent, but it's usually the color commentator who provides breakdowns of plays in a hopefully-digestible way for the average viewer.

Jason Witten is a prime example of a former player who wasn't good at it.  Tom Brady and JJ Watt aren't good at it now, though neither is as bad as Witten was.

I don't know why I care as much about broadcast teams as I do, but it bugs me when they're subpar.  It's even more annoying when people don't seem to know or care that they're subpar, and they're still popular because they're big-name former players.
I guess I meant that most any former athlete could do it, but as with everything, they'd all be somewhere on a bell curve.  I should have said any veteran player has the knowledge to do it.
Football announcers are like baseball managers - they can't really do anything to make things better, but they can very easily make things worse.

Gus Johnson is actively horrible.  He must have dirt on someone in high places in the Big Ten office.
Most announcers, like 80-85% are fine.  The great ones are like a grandpa storyteller, but always respects the actual play on the field.  The bad ones seem to be on drugs and want to stylize half of their phrases.  They explain things they don't have to and whiff on things that could use some more depth.

Basically, as with everything in sports, the effort to obtain the interest/clicks of people who might watch a game once a month, while the prudent, knowledgeable relationships passionate fans have with the 'content' is sacrificed/ignored.

It sucks.

Norvell out at FSU.  Finally.
Since 2024, he went 10-22 overall and 4-17 in the mighty ACC.

To compare him with Napier @ Florida,
Billy went .500 overall his last 3 years, 9-11 in the SEC.

FSU was looking backwards for too long (his undefeated 2023 regular season) and ignored the here-and-now.  They've been an embarrassing dumpster fire for 2+ years.

$47 million buyout.  Probably the most drastic fall off a cliff from one season to another from 2023 to 2024:  13-1 to 2-10.  8-0 in-conference to 1-7.  Insane.
