We had "fire training" annually for a while, it was pretty fun.  They had a contained area where they'd pour Diesel and throw in a match, nothing.  Then some gasoline, match, whoosh.  Fun stuff.  Then we each had to "pull, squeeze, sweep", or something like that, with an extinguisher.

We'd had a rather major fire when I was in school in an adjacent lab to ours.  I went over and ran back to get our fire extinguishers one at a time, they run out rather quickly.  This was a large ether fire.  I recall going through 4-5 of them, and two other guys did as well, and I was going down the hall to get the fire hose, which probably was a bad idea when it burned itself out.

Another time we had an explosion in our lab and I had to take the kid to the ER, that was ... interesting, had a conversation with campus cops, the nurses, and finally the doctor came out to ask me questions.

Some of that is because newer houses since 1985 often are much larger and fancier.  I don't recall that a 1985 house that cost $83,000 was much of a house, and I was in the market then.  We bought a new house in 1987 and I paid well over $220 K for it.  And yeah, it was a nice house.  But not much new was being built that was cheap, other  than some way outside town where land was cheap.

Used houses older would of course have been cheaper, but I'm not sure half would be under the $83 K.  Cheaper than that would be a cracker box house from 1950 or so.
