Cotton Bowl: #5 Ohio State (12-2) vs. #8 USC (11-3) Post Game

Wow. This should be an awesome game. I'm really excited for it. (Little disappointed in not making the playoff, but 2 losses is 2 losses, and a 1 loss was out there and ranked higher)

Again, my goals every season for OSU:
1) Beat *ichigan - Check
2) Win The Big Ten - Check
3) Play in the Rose bowl - well as close as we could get this year. It's Big Champ vs. Pac champ, they just moved the location to practically a neutral site. Cotton is like a Rose isn't it?

This very well could be the battle of whose motivated game; OSU was campaigning for a bigger prize and didn't get it. USC's NFL talent QB could already check out and looks towards his Sunday stock, in this consolation bowl.

USC leads the all time series 13-9-1, including 4-3 in Bowl games; all of which have been the Rose Bowl.

USC is riding a seven game winning streak, that dates back to the 1975 Rose Bowl.

OSU fans haven't moved on from the CFP selection yet

Yeah, we haven't.
I actually was looking for this thread earlier and couldn't find it.
This series bothers me so I really hope that we can get back in the win column.  The Bucks led this series 9-7-1 before I was born but are a dreadful 0-6 in my lifetime.  There are some really tough losses within the seven game losing streak:
  • 1974 season, 1975 Rosebowl:  USC won 18-17.  The Buckeyes suffered a single loss that year, at MSU and were 10-1 and #3 heading into the RoseBowl.  #1 Oklahoma was ineligible due to one of their periodic run-ins with the NCAA.  #2 Bama lost to #9 Notre Dame (who had just gotten demolished by USC).  #4 Michigan got no bowl due to the BigTen's RoseBowl only policy.  USC was #5.  A win would likely have given the Buckeyes at least part of an NC.
  • 1979 season, 1980 Rosebowl:  USC won 17-16.  The Buckeyes were undefeated and #1 heading into the bowls.  #2 Bama beat #6 Arkansas in the SugarBowl.  USC was #3.  #4 FSU lost to #5 Oklahoma in OrangeBowl.  Bama and FSU were also undefeated while #3 USC had a tie with Stanford, #5 OU had lost to Texas, and #6 Arkansas had lost to Houston.  This one cost Ohio State an NC.
  • 1984 season, 1985 RoseBowl:  USC won 20-17.  This loss was pretty much preordained because it came in the midst of Earle Bruce's run of six straight 9-3 seasons and the Buckeyes came in 9-2.
  • 1989 season in SoCal:  USC won 42-3.  Cooper's second season and just not a good time to travel to the West Coast to take on a very good team.
  • 1990 season in Columbus:  USC won 35-26.  1990 was not a good year for Ohio State but it wasn't very good for USC either and the Buckeyes really should have won this game.
  • 2008 season in SoCal:  USC won 35-3.  This was a major blow to Ohio State's national reputation following on the heels of back-to-back bad BCSCG losses to SEC teams.
  • 2009 season in Columbus:  USC won 18-15.  There really is no explanation for this loss.  The Trojans lost that year to 5-7 Washington, 10-3 Oregon (whom Ohio State beat in the RoseBowl), 8-5 Stanford, and 8-5 Arizona.
Seven straight losses with four of them being by a FG or less.  Ugh.

The Buckeye's nine wins were by:
  • 33
  • 21 twice
  • 20 twice
  • 17
  • 16
  • 13
  • 11
USC's 13 wins were by:
  • 39
  • 32 twice
  • 29
  • 25
  • 17
  • 9
  • 7
  • 3 twice
  • 1 three times
Granted, USC does have some big wins but it just sucks for the Buckeyes to be 0-6 in games decided by a TD or less.  If the Buckeyes were a mere 2-4 in the close ones the series would be tied and the Buckeyes would likely have another NC or two.

From an OZone article about all of Ohio State's Rose Bowl non-appearances:

"2017: The Rose Bowl is a playoff game, and the Big Ten champion Buckeyes were left sitting on the curb outside because they’re not on the bouncer’s list.
Don’t worry, though. The sunset over the Wal-Mart next to Jerry World is supposedly just as majestic as the one over the San Gabriel Mountains."

I've talked with a lot of people who went to the Badger game down there last year, against WMU.

The reviews were not positive as to the area, but hey, it's OSU/USC.

You gotta like that.

Yeah stadium setting-wise Jerry's World pales in comparison to the Rose Bowl. But travelling Buckeyes shouldn't find a shortage of nice places to stay/things to do as long as they stay in Dallas or Ft Worth. Don't bother with Arlington other than the game itself.

Yeah, it's not the playoffs, and it's not the Rose Bowl, and so what it is?  I dunno, but interesting it is not.

So, this is not Rose Bowl-East. It's more like Glendale-East?

Who was it that delivered that devastating hit on OJ Simpson in the 69 Rose Bowl?

I was at this game and I am still convinced that Charles White did not cross the goal line on that last TD.
