I was surprised in Cincinnati that folks would ask what high school I attended.They had a big "east side:west side" schism.

 I was from Columbus and still surprise me how much High School, East side/West side mattered.

Cleveland use to be the same way,maybe be an Ohio thing. The Über well to do came from the far east side the rest there kept there noses up also.Sort of like SEC Fandom

Would be curious to compare these numbers to the growth rates. I suspect much of the sunbelt has lower numbers because of all the people moving there, which would also result in population growth. But for New England? I'm surprised those states rely so much on immigration, but I think they are also shrinking.

New England might be because so many of those states are geographically small and allow for more movement without being "far" from friends and family. 

I.e. if you grew up and work in a north Boston suburb but move across the border to southern NH, you've now contributed to what this map shows, despite the fact that you haven't moved far. Or if you grew up in NH but the job opportunities are better in Boston so you move there, again you're not all that far from where you grew up, but you've now contributed to what this map shows. 

I think this somewhat also explains CA being in the middle. It's a tremendous state for transplants, but the main population centers being LA and the Bay Area being SO far from any state border, people aren't exactly moving out in droves. It's also a very large state, population-wise, so even all the transplants aren't enough to change the makeup in the same way that a smaller-population state like NV or AZ would show. 

In fact, the differences in population would mean that every single person that leaves CA for NV or AZ makes a very small change to the percentage shown on this map for CA, but makes a MUCH larger percentage change for NV or AZ.
