a friend of mine from my hometown in NW Iowa describes himself as a drafted teacher, "straight-leg" Grunt in first squad, second platoon, C/2-501, 101st., Nov. '69- 31 May, '70...survivor of the Ripcord AO and happy to still be alive!

Taught high school in Vegas was an assistant football coach and remebers coaching Gerald Riggs

he decided to quit going to strip joints because his former students were employed there

He probably saw some serious combat.  Sooner great Bob Kalsu, the only active NFL player to die in Vietnam (former Cleveland Brown Don Steinbrunner was also killed there), was killed in a mortar attack at FSB Ripcord in July of 1970.
"Straight leg" means he wasn't airborne qualified (or maybe on airborne status).  I think that the 101st was no longer on jump status by the time your friend was there.
I wonder who was more embarrassed when there was mutual recognition--he or his former students.

I think he was more times than not, more embarrassed, but Bob was no angel himself

UNL's DL is unproven and frankly, I think will be a weak spot on the D starting the season.   Purdue's OL's weakness will match to UNL's.   I'm not sure anyone will be concerned about UNL's offense, at least the passing game.  Maybe people will emerge, but there is only one proven weapon in the passing game.   Might change my mind in the fall, but I'd say if UNL doesn't beat Purdue, I'm not sure they will be bowling.  I think that game is that key.

https://www.cbssports.com/college-football/teams/NEB/nebraska-cornhuskers/schedule/regular/

the schedule for 2020...

I have in the win column:  C Michigan, SDSU, Ill, Rutgers, NW
In the loss column, I have:  Cincy, OSU, PSU, iowa, Wisc
In the toss up:  Purdue, Minn

In the win column I think NW is the closest to toss up.  In the loss column, I think Iowa (due to how UNL has played them lately) is the closest to a toss up.

Clearly without spring practices there are a lot of unknowns...

Barron Miles Jr. announced on Tuesday night his plans to be part of the Nebraska football program, joining as a walk-on.

Oh yeah, that name rings plenty familiar, doesn't it? His father Barron Miles was a standout cornerback for the Huskers, a senior on the 1994 national championship team. He won the hearts of a fan base for the way he blanketed receivers, including his dogged coverage in the 1995 Orange Bowl. He also had a rather memorable blocked punt, taking it right off an Oklahoma State punter's foot and into his jersey number for a touchdown.

Barron Jr. will look to make his mark on the other side of the ball, planning to play receiver for the Huskers. He's already in Lincoln.

Barron Miles played a lot bigger than his 5-9 on a good day frame.  He was one of the best leaders I've seen in action on a team.  He blocked a lot of kicks too, not just that memorable jam vs oSu.   He had a really nice run in the CFL IIRC.   Another great NJ kid that escaped the clutches of Rutgers.  :)
