The week of Dec. 8-14, looking back in five-year intervals

1903: Nebraska tries to arrange a 1904 neutral-site game with Eastern powerhouse Princeton.

1933: Once-beaten Nebraska ends the season No. 2 nationally in the Dickinson Rating System, an Illinois professor's math-based rankings. (There would be no AP polls until 1936).

1943: Former Husker halfback and future NFL’er Bob DeFruiter is among the offensive stars as the March Field 4th Army Air Force team downs Pacific, 19-0.

1963: Miami pursues Bob Devaney to succeed Andy Gustafson as head coach.

1983: Tom Osborne is uneasy as oddsmakers list Nebraska as an 11-point favorite over Miami in the Orange Bowl. Dean Steinkulhler, meanwhile, adds the Outland Trophy to his hardware haul.

1993: Respect for Nebraska is in short supply as the Huskers prepare for the national title game. Meanwhile, the Butkus Award goes to Trev Alberts.

1998: Tom Osborne is inducted into college football's Hall of Fame.

2013: Tommie Frazier is inducted into the College Football Hall of Fame. Meanwhile, Nebrska draws Georgia as a bowl opponent for the second consecutive year.

2018: The coaching staff makes a mass recruiting visit to woo four-star defensive end Ty Robinson in Arizona

1913: Nebraska opposes a proposal to let Missouri Valley Conference schools schedule neutral-site games.

1918: A 1919 game that had been tentatively scheduled with Indiana, coached by former Nebraska coach Jumbo Stiehm, is called off.

1933: George Sauer is named a first-team Walter Camp All-American.

1958: Dick McCashland is named to Pitt’s “all-opponent team.” As a gag, three Pittsburgh sportswriters are named honorary captains of the opponents for overhyping the Panthers during the week before their upset loss to Nebraska.

1963: After being wooed by Miami, Bob Devaney announces he'll stay at Nebraska. The Huskers, meanwhile, prepare for their Orange Bowl game against Auburn.

1968: Despite a disappointing 6-4 season, Nebraska leads the Big Eight in attendance.

1983: Mike Rozier adds the Maxwell Award to his trophy collection.

2008: Running back Rex Burkhead of Plano, Texas, commits to the Huskers.

The week of Dec. 22-28, looking back in five-year intervals

1928: Nebraska hires Texas A&M's Dana X. Bible as the successor to coach E.E. Bearg, who resigned earlier in December. 

1933: Nebraska’s Dana X. Bible becomes president of the American Football Coaches' Association, and the group decides to investigate “unfair” firings of coaches.

1938: Profits from Nebraska home football games in 1938 amounted to about $135,000, matching the previous year's robust total.

1948: Pay for play? Nebraska coach George “Potsy” Clark says it's counterproductive.

1963: With Bob Devaney signed to a fresh contract extension, the coach and his Huskers arrive in Miami for their Orange Bowl match against Auburn.

1973: The Huskers arrive in Dallas on a mission to erase the bad memories of Nebraska's regular-season finale, a 27-0 loss to Oklahoma.

1978: Oklahoma and Billy Sims prepare for their second-chance game against the Huskers.

1983: The Huskers leave for Miami two days early because of cold weather in Nebraska.

1988: Unlike five years earlier, Nebraska is the underdog as it prepares to face Miami in the Orange bowl.

1993: The Huskers arrive in Miami, and AP predicts a 38-14 Florida State romp. | Osborne in SI

The theme of this article is that the Cornhuskers win, by losing: Husker Dan: Did a Late Husker INT Help NU Land a Prized Recruit? (msn.com) Matt Rhule is a really smart guy, and Chubba Purdy took one for the team.

I'm not a fan of Husker Dan and his articles
haven't read one in years and not reading that one

the biggest win to get Riaola was Carson Beck's decision

Chubba could have thrown a perfect TD pass on the last play of the Iowa game and Riaola would still know he's the better QB and be the starter next fall in Lincoln.

1903-04: Intercollegiate football comes under fire at a meeting of the Nebraska Teachers' Association, but Nebraska's James Ingersoll Wyer, the university's librarian and a member of the Athletic Board, comes to its defense.

1923-24: The stress of a tough year takes its toll on Nebraska coach Fred Dawson, who is recuperating in Colorado from a “nervous breakdown” suffered at the end of the season.

1933-34: George Sauer does it all in the East-West Shrine game, scoring the game’s only touchdowns and intercepting a pass to set up one of the scores. Also, Nebraska coach Dana X. Bible defends college football from criticism by U.S. Agriculture Secretary Henry Wallace.

In this batch of bowls, three stand out: Nebraska's first win in a major bowl, the go-for-two loss to Miami and another narrow defeat 10 years later that served as a springboard to three national titles.
