It's the current two division conference that has kept the two best teams out of the game several times. Hopefully we don't get screwed again when the SEC goes to 16 teams. It's past times to get rid of the old rivalries instead of a schedule that gets TN into the championship game.

I think there are three teams right now better than TCU and USC west who will more than likely be in the CFP, Tennesessee is one of those teams.

snip:

The SEC’s two best teams will not play for its conference championship.

We know this, because we know Tennessee is better than LSU. The Vols invaded Tiger Stadium and thumped LSU, 40-13, in October in Baton Rouge.

LSU (9-3, 6-2 SEC), on the heels of a loss to previously hapless Texas A&M
a loss to previously hapless Texas A&M, will stumble into the SEC Championship to face No. 1 Georgia in Atlanta.

LSU won a division full of paper tigers thanks to an overtime victory against Alabama. Credit Brian Kelly for a solid debut, in spite of Saturday’s result, but that game proved this team does not belong opposite Georgia in Atlanta.

This marks the SEC’s least-compelling conference championship matchup since Alabama plastered Florida in 2016.

Divisions are to blame.

The SEC split into divisions in 1992 after expanding to 12 teams.

Creating divisions allowed the SEC to take advantage of an NCAA rule allowing for a conference championship game if a league featured at least 12 teams and was divided into two sides, a savvy – and lucrative – move that changed the sport. The SEC became a trendsetter. Every FBS conference now plays a championship game.

But NCAA rules evolved, and divisions no longer are required to conduct a conference championship. So, divisions are sunsetting in leagues throughout the country. The SEC plans to ditch divisions after Oklahoma and Texas join the conference in favor of a cohesive, 16-team league that will send its top two teams to the conference championship.

If such a format were in place this season, the Vols (10-2, 6-2) would earn a rematch with Georgia (12-0, 8-0) and retain hope of qualifying for the College Football Playoff. As it is, Tennessee is resigned to watching from home and likely accepting a New Year’s Six bowl bid.

At least Bama is not going to back into the championship again.

With a NY6  bowl win,  the Vols would have  completed a  great season.

all things considered, i am thrilled with what UT has done this season... i expected an 8-4/9-3 at best with losses to bama, uga, and either or both UF and LSU...

they lost one they should have won... they were less competitive in the other...

and though the UT team that existed between after the UF game and until the UGA game was likely playing better than anyone in CFB, the team that exists now is maybe and only maybe a top 10 team... Milton showed again he fairly earned his title "Overthrow Joe, the flat footed mile slinger".  ask the fellers from the shout box if that ain't what i called him from his first appearance against Pitt last year...

TCU is MAYBE the 5th or 6th best team in the SEC.

Other than that --

my comments on another site.  FW(they're)W:

Quote
It is entirely possible that the green-eyed monster, and what the Bible calls "covetousness", derailed our chance to play for a NC. #33 is the heart and soul of our D. I suspect that there may be a little of an Al Wilson dynamic at play -- the other guys, especially our young secondary, are AFRAID to give less than their all (and more) when he's on the field. Speculation...

Agree 100% with Arlington. Heupel has done a MASTERFUL job of managing a bunch of overachieving misfit toys. Young men, many -- at least some, or a few -- with violent and impulsive dispositions, the presence and control of which is essential to success on the gridiron.

But you're dealing with human beings, and human nature, here. Young studs, who may go off track at any moment. To recover and regroup this team, after the debacle in Columbia, is... enormous. And bodes well for the future. As far as I'm concerned, we have our coach. Our guy. May this incredible season not be remembered for the one real blemish (UGA was forgivable -- their 28 shouldn't have been enough, but... ), but rather for being Orange or Sugar Bowl champions -- the foundation for another epoch of Big Orange excellence!

...

On "Overthrow Joe":

Quote
I saw a clip of (Joe's) post-game comments. Someone asked about the overthrows. "Is it just excitement that causes those?"

Milton was forthright to say yeah, it was.

Maybe -- MAYBE -- a year older, with more time in the system, and an entire offseason as the "the guy" -- he'll settle down a little. Not sure. To me, he just doesn't seem to have that intangible "feel" for the game. Missing a wide open Fant is evidence #1, more than the air-mailed bombs. You GOTTA make that throw. It can mean the difference between winning and losing against better teams.

Problem is -- some things just can't be fixed. I speak from experience. I can crush a driver with the best of 'em -- well, at least, pretty good. But every time I "find my swing", and start nailing in on the screws, something creeps in. It's a tendency to swing too hard, to get that extra five or ten yards. I don't even realize it, until after the ball starts going wildly left or right. And then it's damned hard to back it down again.

And it's a chronic condition. A head thing.

If that's the case with Joe -- he's got a hard ceiling. And so will next year's team.

"Snoop Dog."

I watched a bit of a vid on him last night.  Until I realized -- "you're watching a hype reel on a kid who's still in HS.  Get a grip on yourself."

But "Snoop Dog"...

that's pretty funny.

UT yeah!
