Dunno about the Music City Bowl, but if I was running things at Tennessee, I'd simply refuse to play if that same officiating crew was announced to call the game.  I'd demand a change in crew or the team simply won't show up.

That playing surface alone should be plenty of reason to never play in the game again

Vegas has been chirping about announcing the officiating crew the week prior when lines are opened- the officiating is that bad.  Of course the NCAA has decided announcing the crew early would invite cheating by targeting the officials.

There is humor here.  I dont like it, though.

Referee?  Jerry Magallanes.....where have I heard that name before?

Oh yeah....

ACC suspends Miami-Duke officiating crew 2 games for 'series of errors' on wild final play

SNIP:
The ACC announced Sunday that the entire officiating crew from the game, including referee Jerry Magallanes and replay official Andrew Panucci, has been suspended two games for a "series of errors" during and after the final play. Miami's 30-27 victory will stand, however.

"The quality of our officiating program is of the highest importance to the league and its schools, and the last play of the game was not handled appropriately," said ACC Commissioner John Swofford.

Makes you wonder how an officiating crew would be rewarded with a bowl game after being suspended for incompetency.

Yep unlike the SEC the ACC does suspend crews for F'ing up.

I told my wife at the beginning the refs were cheating TN especially on spotting the ball. One especially always marked TN a yard short and Purdue a yard long.

It wasn't just the refs though there was a lot of bad decisions in the passing game by Hooker and the coaches weren't helping.

The last drive Heupel either didn't tell Hooker all they needed was to get into decent field goal range or he didn't understand the situation because he threw two bombs that should never have been thrown trying to be a hero.

But we could say all the money must have been on Tennessee to cover the spread. Bookies don't lose they make sure of it.

Also, the refs were probably getting even for both TN and KY embarrassing Carolina in basketball.

I agree that UT had some poor defense and poor offensive execution.
But you are right about the ball spotting and a couple of the Pass Interference calls on our DBs were dubious (a couple of them were correct) whereas the blatant holding of Tillman went uncalled.

Don't know why they had something against Tennessee, but it certainly appeared that way.  Even a Purdue guy admitted as much.

Boom!!!! You nailed it. I said it many times last night and posted it several times on Volnation. Hooker was trying to hard to be the hero. Hooker last night was like a ball hog BB player that becomes too infatuated with the 3 point shot on a bad night. They ain’t dropping but he keeps throwing up the bombs hoping he can be the hero in the end. Sometimes it ends better when the QB takes what’s given to him instead of forcing the play. With 20 seconds left Hooker could’ve thrown 2 quick 5 to 8 yard passes toward the center of the field and gotten closer for the FG kicker. But nooooo, he’s got to be the hero and it cost us the game.

WI like Heupel, a lot. He has changed the culture and made the Vols fun to watch and cheer for again.

However, his end of half and end of game play selection and clock management may be the worst I’ve ever seen.

That game should have been ended by an easy FG in regulation, but for some unfathomable reason —- our coach is unaware that he can take timeouts, and that he needed only about 10-15 yards for a manageable FG attempt for the win. Instead, he inexplicably opts for 2 straight low percentage go routes to the end zone, when 10 yds and 3 pts would do the job.

Apparently, Heupel is unable to take his foot off the gas, or go conservative, when is is completely warranted, and the only logical option.

Yes, we were screwed by the refs, especially in OT, but it never had to get to that point.  Tempt fate long enough, and fate wins.  Fate won.
It appears Small was hurt and took himself out, hence Wright went in at a crucial time.

Hooker was off after a tackle, but still was a better option than Joe. He appeared to be only looking to one side late in the game last night instead of the entire field, Makes me wonder what is going on.

Earlier this year we saw Heupel take the foot off and go conservative. I doubt we will hear much about why he did what he did. Could be the short routes were not there but we had a opening down the sides. With the little time left a scramble would have taken more time and the lanes did not at first appear to be there. I know on one of the last tow passes a defender got a piece of the ball, just enough to throw it off.

Going into the season, we knew we were not only thin on D, but limited talent in critical areas as well. Same on O but not as bad. Add in we had extremely limited depth as well. Before the season started many picked us to only win 2-3 games, we could have won 9 regular season games. A bowl game was not on our horizon for maybe two seasons. The team never quit. They fought. Some of the players who could go pro are coming back. This a team to be proud of.

We won't really have a idea of Coaches ceiling for another season or two. We have to get some depth, some talent first for the coaches to work with. The indicators are we do coach players up. Are there some assistants that need replaced, not sure given with what they have had to work with both on and off the field. Just changing the mindset was a tall order and that seems to be well on its way to being done.

I am already looking forward to next season. Go Vols.

Truman said: “The fundamental basis of this nation’s laws was given to Moses on the Mount.  The fundamental basis of our Bill of Rights comes from the teachings…  If we don't have the proper fundamental moral background, we will finally wind up with a totalitarian government which does not believe in rights for anybody except the state.”

As bad as the D was last night I don’t think Banks is going anywhere. We need more talent and better depth there and then he can truly evaluated. Heupel will keep the staff in tact for consistency. Players like that. That don’t want to play for a team that is consistently a coaching carousel.

What struck me last night was our players “conditioning”. They are conditioned for a marathon but they lack strength and power. The Purdue players weren’t conditioned for the marathon but when they really needed to dig in, their players were stronger and pushed us around. Our guys need to hit the weights in a bad way. I’m 52 years old and stopped lifting a while back but I’d bet that if I hit the gym hard for 6 months I’d be able to lift more than half the Vol team and that’s the sad state our lifting program is in. I remember the days when our players looked chiseled. Today they’re flabby.
