Texas A&M @ Texas - Let the Cockroaches Roam Free!

Gonna be an exciting time in Austin on Friday.

I wasn't planning on going but I have a friend with extras, so maybe I will.  Weather should be sublime for a good cockroaching...

Horns better come with an improved defense they showed today
They won't let me give blood anymore. The burnt orange color scares the hell out of the doctors.

I think we'll see the same defense we've seen for the second half of the season.  The ags are gonna score.

But Texas is gonna score more.  The oline is much improved and Arch has his business sorted out.  The ags' defense isn't good and is gonna get worked over all night long.

I suspect we'll see some Twelving.  Bet the over.

Yep, it’s going to suck being 11-1, and miss the SEC CCG.

Going to the CFP while Texas sits at home will be some consolation.

I wish we had some more A&M fans on the board. Been awhile since @Shiner and @Bonfired have been on.

Wonder if there's any plans to move this back to a Thanksgiving day game.  Didn't they used to play on Thanksgiving?

The Horns and the Aggie can answer better than I can, but IIRC they typically played their game on the day after Thanksgiving.

We played Nebraska on Thanksgiving weekend for quite a while. The 1971 GOTC was on Thanksgiving Day.

In the early days of the Big 12, for some reason they moved the game to the Friday after, or T+1 as it was known. I don’t know about anything before then, but I know a lot of older Ags complained about it a lot. A lot of it was blamed on the Big 12 , some was blamed on TV.  The really weird thing about it was that it was at 10 am. 10 o’clock in the friggin’ morning. I have no idea how you’d look it up but I seem to remember Ole Miss and Miss State were given a better time than A&M/UT.

There was and probably always will be a certain vocal minority element of Aggies that believed that UT had an outsized influence on the conference. Some felt that UT pushed the time and date to minimize any success that we had against UT at the time. Not many remember this but from 1984-1994 A&M won 9/10 games in the series. Ancient history now but A&M was 100% the more popular college team in the late 80’s and early 90’s, at least around these parts.

I will mention that A&M was on probation in 1994 and banned from TV. They moved the game that year so that UT and somebody else could be on TV at thanksgiving. I think it was TCU. I’m not sure if the 1995 game was on Thanksgiving or not, but from about 1996 to 1998 it was on T+1. 1999 seems like it was on Friday, but that was the bonfire game, and I was there but I can’t recall.  It seems like in the very late 90’s the game was still on Friday but moved up to a more decent time. Sometimes after 2000 the game was moved back to Thanksgiving, but I don’t remember if it stayed there until we left the Big 12.

From the 50s through the early 90s it was almost always on Thanksgiving evening.

In the early 90s, the Ags' probation knocked it off TV and so it was moved off of T-day.

Then in the early days of the B12 it was also moved to T+1 along with Nebraska-Colorado.  (Miss State-Ole Miss took the Tday night time slot for many of those years).

Texas-TAMU went back to Thanksgiving evening for a few years right before A&M moved to the SEC.

The NFL kind of has Thanksgiving itself sewn up. Betwixt them and the NBA, there isn't much room for what's basically a stack of rivalry games. Too valuable to bet into the pro league competition.

I'd be less likely to attend myself if it were on Thanksgiving proper. As it is, I'll be leaving Waco around 2 or so on Friday and getting home around midnight.
My section 117 seats (far upper deck on the North EZ sort of in-line with "A" in "TEXAS") are in prime "we got season tix so we could re-sell them on SeatGeek" territory. My daughter worried I wouldn't be able to stay restrained. I kinda feel, though, that being aggressive when you're losing is infantile, and I don't feel like being aggressive when winning. I am, however, really good at talking s**t without actually addressing anyone in particular.

I loved having the game on Thanksgiving Day.  That was my childhood and on into my high school and college years.  We went to the game a lot, with my family, and then with friends when I was older.  All of our family plans were set according to the game.  In Austin years, we'd eat early, then get down to the tailgate party and the game.  In College Station years, we'd eat later, watch the Cowboys, and then that would lead into watching the UT-TAMU game.  By halftime we'd be getting back into the leftover turkey to make sandwiches.

T+1 is just another day, not really very special.  And it's not actually a holiday for a lot of people.  Might as well just be the Saturday after T-Day if it's not going to be on T-Day itself.

We played Nebraska on Thanksgiving weekend for quite a while. The 1971 GOTC was on Thanksgiving Day.

There was a decade or so (maybe more, maybe less, going strictly off the top of my head here) where UT/A&M occupied the T+1 2:30pm slot, on a different channel than LSU/Arkansas on CBS.  I remember these well because I was usually at my uncle's house during the Thanksgiving weekend, they're mostly Aggies, and there was always tension about which game was the main priority in the living room.  Some years they had other things to do, the women would go get snookered by Black Friday "deals" and the men would go hunting or doing upkeep on their leases, etc., and the big TV was all mine.  In which case, damn the Aggies and the Horns, we're BBQing pigs.  Other years....well, the women were still out Christmas shopping on Black Friday, but the men were home eating leftovers and watching football.  In those years, I usually had to find a smaller TV in a bedroom by myself to watch LSU.

Honestly, I didn't have enough awareness of Texas teams back in the day to know they played on Thanksgiving for years.  I remember utee saying something about it here years ago, which was news to me, and then when A&M joined the SEC we eventually started playing our games @A&M on Thanksgiving, which I didn't like, but the Aggies thought they had a tradition, and as usual, when other SEC schools claim they have needs and traditions that need satisfying, LSU is going to get shafted and screw whatever the school or its fans want.  I'll digress on that.  On the @LSU years the game was on Saturday.  That was a small bonus for me, because I never liked the T+1 games with Arkansas, so while we played on Thanksgiving every other year, we also got our Saturdays-in-Death-Valley back in the in-between years.

And now we end our seasons with Oklahoma.

We shoulda never let Tulane leave the SEC.  We'd have an in-state rival today to end with and wouldn't get jerked around trying to be forced to be every new guy's "new RiVAlz!!!"

But to be fair, A&M and LSU have a long history between them even before the SEC days. So if you had to "force" a rivalry on another team, A&M would always be, in my opinion, a natural fit due to distance, geography, and history.
