Stop-gap: 8 game SEC schedule for 2024
« on: June 02, 2023, 01:09:44 AM »
Just for a year, sort of kicking the can down the road....seeing if they can extract more money from ESPN for a 9th game, with OU and Texas in the fold.

I predict they get the additional monies and go to a 9-game schedule, consisting of 3+6.  Bama will drop LSU for an easier 3rd "rival," after Auburn and Tennessee.

With an 8 game conference slate, most will play one other P5 team OOC.  With a 9 gamer, most may not.

I don't think Georgia, Florida, or South Carolina would likely drop their annual OOC P5 rivalry games.  And I'm pretty sure Texas will continue to play a marquee P5 OOC game.  Can't speak for anyone else though.

I agree, and the "most" could be wrong here.  I'd like everyone to play at least ten P5 level teams per year.

Of course, at times, some P5 teams get skeered and drop your team from the slate.

I hope it's just for 2024.

If/when it goes to 9, as God intended, OU will almost certainly continue to schedule a marquee OOC game each year against a P5 program. 6-3 format, as was being discussed several months ago.

Disappointed in Bama voting for 8 after all that Saban has said for the last several years in favor of 9.

I hope not, but one way or the other, we're going to lose either Bama or Auburn, neither of which sits well with me.  My guess is Bama would be our pick (not that we'll get a pick), which makes a lot of sense, but man, has the LSU/AU series offered a lot of crazy entertainment over the years.

I actually will miss the Florida game, since most models I've seen have that dropping off the permanent schedule.  I know it's not a "traditional" rivalry, but.....I mean, at this point it's been going since I was 13 years old and a ton of LSU fans don't know a world where LSU and Florida don't have a midseason showdown.  This year is already weird with how late we're playing Florida.

But we're going to get Ole Miss, A&M, and one of the Alabama schools, probably Bama, but that's just a guess.  I sort of see the point of A&M, that was an ooc rivalry for a long time, but it was ooc, and we have more history with MSU than any other school and for that reason I'd prefer to keep it, so the cowbells are another one I'll be sad to lose.

I guess I should just be happy that the powers that be don't seem interested so far in trying to fabricate another rivalry with the newcomers, like they did with us and Arkansas, then with A&M.

I think an annual Texas-LSU game would be awesome.

But for obvious reasons, it's unlikely.

But for obvious reasons, it's unlikely.

Maybe, but I can barely tolerate a portion of our fanbase as it is.  Adding Texas to the mix might cause me to go postal on them at some point.

The explanation behind this is:  there are a lot of LSU fans, online anyway, who like to take shots at Texas and Notre Dame.  They despise both of them, and I've never known why.  Like.....there's barely any history there.  My theory with ND is that Louisiana is heavily Catholic, and they don't like Notre Dame's schtick over the years about being the only school Catholics should aspire to.  Which is dumb, but it's the best I can figure.  But Texas?  I fail to see why we care one way or the other about Texas.  Only theory I have there is $ and prestige envy.  Like.....it could be capital border war, which would be something.....if they'd played more than a mere 18 times in their entire history.

Lagniappe:  largest MOV between the two schools is 20-0 LSU in 1938, and 34-0 Horns in 1941.

So, suck it, Horns....or whatever.

Horns down?

Saw something off?

.....nah, it's not genuine.  Texas is like Georgia.  They're too likeable overall to hate.  Plus I lived in both places for a time and know many likeable fans, and that makes teams harder to hate.

I've encountered mostly great LSU fans over the years.  Typically from our baseball home-and-home series over the decades.  I don't worry too much about how online fan bases act, I've found they're usually not all that representative of the average Joe kind of fan.

I think LSU fans respect the deep abiding hate that Razorback fans have for Texass and join in because a good hate is just the thing sometimes!

Our hate tends to rotate around some other teams, but give us enough liquor and we can probably muster some more.

Anything is better than throwing newbies together and random "rivalries" from '92.  A&M vs Carolina?  OM vs Vandy?  UK vs MSU?

Stop.
