I guess at least we got thrown together with a team we played almost every year since 1953.

Still hard to believe we've only played Tennessee 34 times, and the bulk of that was between the late 1930's and early 50's.  Played Vandy just 32 times.  UGA 33, and a handful of those are only because we met in the SEC CG.

We even played A&M 50 times ooc before they joined the SECw.

There was no mandated or centralized scheduling prior to the '92 expansion.  Makes me wonder what the point of a conference was, did LSU schedule schools like A&M more than what is now SEC East teams due to proximity convenience, or what?  I mean, Florida and Kentucky are not close, but we played them a lot.

I mean, we should've been playing UGA more often for easy wins, since we own them all-time :)

I assume we're doing away with divisions next year since I haven't heard anything about Texas/OU joining the West, or moving Bama/AU to the East.

Any word on how the conference will determine the SEC CG participants?

The conference scheduling was wacky back in the 60s and 70s.  You had some teams with 4 or 5 conf games, others with 6 or even 7.  That's nuts.  SEC teams played 4 and 7 conf games in the same season.

Things trended to 6 games consistently in the 80s, until 88, then it was 7.  Expansion led to 8 conf games in 92, and continuity.

Georgia Tech would not play either Mississippi team, ever, when in the SEC.  A few times a nonconference opponent would get counted as an SEC game.  It was ultra goofy at times.

Seemed like more of a "loose scheduling agreement amongst teams" than a conference, which makes sense back when, because the money coming from conference pooling television rights was zero before 1984, and still pretty minimal until the early 90s..

And I could be wrong, just going off memory here, but as I recall, the early 90s is about when the SEC started tightening up the schedules.

I believe the divisions were created, perma-rivals locked in, and the standard "every team from your division + perma-rival + 2 more cross-division teams" in 1992, with the addition of Arkansas from the SWC.

I think.

Honestly, I was more into the NBA back then than college football.  All I remember for sure is a lot of Aggie jokes from LSU fans, and that in my household we were never to say anything flattering about Ole Miss.

Yes, things got more organized with the 12 team league and CG, it was pretty organzed before that.  But in the old days when I was a young man, anything went.

Oh yeah makes sense that the expansion to 12 and addition of the CCG would result in more deliberate scheduling from the SEC front office.

This is a 1979 schedule, which is pretty weird:

  Sat, Sep 15 Wake ForestAthens, Ga.21 - 22 (L)
  Sat, Sep 22 Clemsonat Clemson, S.C.7 - 12 (L)
  Sat, Sep 29 South CarolinaAthens, Ga.20 - 27 (L)
  Sat, Oct 06 Mississippiat Oxford, Miss.24 - 21 (W)
  Sat, Oct 13 LSUAthens, Ga.21 - 14 (W)
  Sat, Oct 20 Vanderbiltat Nashville, Tenn.31 - 10 (W)
  Sat, Oct 27 KentuckyAthens, Ga.20 - 6 (W)
  Sat, Nov 03 VirginiaAthens, Ga.0 - 31 (L)
  Sat, Nov 10 Floridaat Jacksonville, Fla.33 - 10 (W)ABC
  Sat, Nov 17 AuburnAthens, Ga.13 - 33 (L)
  Sat, Nov 24 Georgia Techat Atlanta, Ga.16 - 33 (W)

The Dawgs lost to four ACC opponents OOC, but won every SEC game before Auburn (where they lead early in the game).  Had they beaten Auburn, they would have "won" the conference and gone to the SB, with a 6-5 record if they lost to Tech too.  They had six conference games.

1966, about the time I was paying some attention.  Ten game slate with FIVE conference games.  That year they beat Spurrier.

That did not format well at all.  Anyway, five Sec games out of ten.  An OOC loss to Miami 7-6.

A rare win for UGA over LSU :96:

in 1974 sec adopted a uniform scheduling format, requiring 6 games. 5 were permanent opponents. in 1988, went to a 7 game schedule, stuck with 5 permanent. in 1992, split into divisions, bumped to 8 conference games, and you plays all 5 in your division, 2 in the other division were locked opponents, and remaining was on rotation. in 2003, the 2 locked cross-division opponents were reduced to 1.
