Ewers to the NFL. I guess he was happy enough with his draft grade to turn down an apparent $8 mil NIL transfer offer, per 247.

Since he had a year of eligibility left, I wonder what his status would've been next year just staying put at UT. Maybe he wondered too, and that factored in the decision to leave. He's had a definite ceiling at UT, but he still has a lot more experience than Manning, and I'd think it would be tough for Sark and the staff to let Arch pass him up, if he'd stayed.

Yeah I'm sure there were many conversations had, but have no idea how they went. I suspect these things to be true:

Arch let the staff know he didn't want to wait around another year. He was actually fine waiting this long, but another year puts him off-schedule compared to what his team/handlers have determined is his proper development and procession from college to the NFL..
Ewers was therefore unsure of his future. The coaches stuck with him this year but there's no guarantee they would next year, they are obviously concerned about the QB succession, not just for Arch but for those recruited in years after Arch.
Ewers really does love being a Longhorn and didn't want to play for another college team. Apparently some of his offers were from teams that are on Texas' schedule next year, and he didn't want that to happen. He wants to preserve his legacy as a Longhorn QB and transferring schools would damage/diminish that both in his own eyes, and in the eyes of Texas fans.
Ewers has already made several million dollars from his NIL money so far, both from the UT Collectives as well as the individual NIL deals he struck for himself (Dr. Pepper, Kombucha, etc.). Not $8M in a single season type of money, but he's not begging for scraps on the side of the road or anything.

So taking all of that, it seems like Ewers decided that he can best serve his goals by entering the draft and moving on to the NFL. As frustrating as some of his play could be, there's no doubt that he was a primary contributor in helping Texas out of the dark ages and reestablishing the program as a national power. I am thankful to Quinn and wish him the best. I hope it works out well for him in the NFL.

Compared to next year's draft class, this one will be easier for QBs (all else being equal).
Texas was moving to Arch next season regardless. From a purely team management sense, it makes the most sense. We'll be breaking in a ton of promising, but untested, players. If there's growing pains, may as well get them all over next year.
There's always been some reason why we should "Just wait! Quinn will light it up next year!". While I believe he's been a excellent overall QB for Texas, and there's like 100 other programs that'd name the meeting room after him, it seems we've seen his ceiling.

An NFL team that doesn't need a starter next season would do well to invest in him.

Any idea what round he will go in? I wasn't sure if he was still considered top round talent or not. I understand that after about the 3rd round, the pay gets really low. Not sure what a first rounder gets paid these days, but $8 MM is a lot of money to pass up if you're not in the first round.

The same 247 article I was reading says two NFL scouts told 247 they expect Ewers to go from late first round to early third round. It also states late first round picks are slotted at about $13.2 mil for a 4 yr deal. Players selected at the top of the 3rd round sign for around $6.4 mil.

It's also possible that $8M number is a bunch of bulljive. In fact I strongly suspect it is. $3M or $4M wouldn't surprise me. But the $6M-$8M numbers sound like fantasy land.

I'll be interested to see how his combine goes. It could really be true that he was hampered by the shoulder injury in 23, and the oblique in 24, and that with proper rest and better luck, he could complete accurate throws downfield. However, he sort of ran out of chances to impress in that category at Texas.
He's demonstrated good mechanics (usually), shown he can make off-platform throws, and for the most part read a defense. After this season's injury, he sort of stopped trusting his reads, would double check, and throw late. Hard to imagine getting a better OL than what he had at Texas, so he'll need to learn to climb the pocket rather than self-sack by spilling sideways.

There's a lot to like. A team that won't need a starter until 2028 or so will get a bargain.

Yeah those two self-sacks in the first half of the most recent game were just brutal. Drive-killing, momentum-killing, disheartening, gut-wrenching mistakes. Costly, when yards and points were so hard to come by.

But he wasn't always that way. Early in 2023, and early in 2024, he was confident and poised and able to move effectively in the pocket and make every throw necessary. I have no doubt that the injuries hindered him, and I hope he can heal up and impress in the pros.

But like you said, he pretty much used up all his chances here.

I get what that, but more from a fan perspective. I'm trying to put myself in the head of a coaching staff, and from that perspective, seems like it sure would be hard to pass up a guy with so much experience. However good Arch will be, he likely won't be that good right away.

Maybe it's like Tulip(?) said....the cohort groups moving through the program are sort of aging out with another, greener group, moving in. Maybe it makes sense to get Arch's growing pains out of the way now, if they believe Quinn returning and being good wouldn't matter as much due to the other guys not being as good.

Maybe. I also think they're concerned with the entire succession. Ewers staying another year almost certainly sends Arch Manning away, and there are now 2 other QBs in the queue behind Arch. One on campus now, one on campus in the summer, neither of which has taken a single snap of college football.

But ultimately, I don't think they'd have just let Ewers go without a fight, if they thought he was the best option for the team.

This is a pretty strong lineup. Four of those new o-line starters have 3 years in the program and were on heavy rotation throughout the past two seasons. We haven't had this kind of o-line depth in... well... ever.
