Female Kicker

Didn't CU have a female kicker in the 90's when Rick Neheisal was the coach?  I could have sworn that they had one and it generated a lot of publicity back then as well.  Seems that this Vanderbilt situation is like deja vu.

CU had Katy Hnida (sp) rehearsed and ready to go. I don't think she ever saw the field at Colorado. She transferred to New Mexico, where she kicked a couple of XPs and FGs. She also claimed sex assault at CU. I don't know if anything ever came of that.

I find Fuller kicking for Vandy remarkable because she answered the call when her University needed her. She'd just finished winning the SEC soccer championship when she got a call from Vandy's head football coach. All his kickers were unable to play. Despite never having trained formally to kick an American football, and with the realization that the internet would mess with her, she went ahead and practiced.

I don't expect her to be a Groza Award winner or anything, but that's not the point. She was willing to help out a not-very-good football team when she was needed. It's a collegiate sport, and she's a collegiate athlete.

I understand students were off campus, so the option of finding a male HS kicker was gone.  I'd bet some player active on the team could have kicked.

This is what I was thinking of.  So just because she kicked for a non-p5 she's old news?

To me, none of this is news of any relevance beyond a brief mention.

Nobody anywhere thinks it's the start of a trend.

There just isnt any real upside for a team to have a female kicker

Theres no doubt that there are plenty of females out there who can kick extra pts and 35 yard FGs but the baggage
that comes with it is just not worth it

I'm personally in favor of winning football games. If a female player can throw the 15 yard out on a rope, or track down the swing pass sideline to sideline, sign her up.

In reality, respecting biology, kicking is where you'll likely find a woman on a P5 program. In high school, my daughter could easily clear the FG crossbar from the 40 on a direct kick with a soccer ball. Of course, this meant she'd missed the goal badly, so I hoped that didn't happen often. There's a world of difference from kicking a soccer ball to an American football, but the idea is there.

Texas is currently not in need (I hope) of a decent kicker, and she's on track to graduate Spring 2022, so the opportunity is likely gone.
