Yeah, I did a search for female comedians and she was there, along with Carol Burnett, and quite a few others...

For me that gets into the same "Moms Mabley" territory--I've never heard their on-stage routines, so I can't really speak with any authority.

On the male side, another one would be Bob Newhart. I understand he was a hell of a comedian, but it was before my time and before "stand-up specials" were all that popular, so the only real memory I have of him was reruns of Newhart with Larry, and his brother Daryl and his other brother Daryl.
Newhart had a regular gag where he was talking on the phone to various people or companies but you couldn't hear the person on the other line. I know it was more skit comedy than stand-up but still quite funny.

brian regan, jim gaffigan, and john mulaney are my current favs running. regan and gaffigan are both clean throughout, mulaney will drop some words once in a while but relatively clean.

I don't get the cleanliness thing.

If someone is cussing in inordinate amount of times, then they're not funny.  If their cussing aligns with the joke they're telling, then who cares?

Shock value is a big thing in comedy. When I was a kid, race and drugs were big topics. Nowadays sex seems to be a big, driving force.
And that's my complaint with about 95% of female comics today - EVERYTHING is about sex and/or relationships.  Diversify a little!

I like Sarah Silverman because she does branch out and hits the hush-hush topics HARD.  Old fogies probably hate her for this.  Hits religion HARD.  Jokes about everything that makes you squeemish and doesn't rely on any single one.

If someone says she's too dry or crass, that's fine.  But you gotta appreciate the breadth of topics for a modern female comic.

Yeah, but Eddie Murphy is on your list for Mt Rushmore and he dropped the F-bomb 223 times in a 90 minute set on Raw.  That seems inordinate to me.  Look, I don’t mind blue comedy but I do think a lot of comedians  go too far with it and rely on the profanity too much for the laughs.

I don’t respect clean comedians out of some sense of morality or manners.  I respect them because I think it’s harder to stand on a stage and make people laugh without hitting on risqué material or cussing a little bit.

Some of those roasts were great and the comics were sharp but every other word was obscene, gender related or not. It's an insult exchange that would make Rickles blush

Garofalo was funny back in the day. Then she just got into angry unfunny political rants.

Again, that was something about Kathleen Madigan. She wasn't all about sex and/or relationships... Barely at all, as I remember it. And she's been a mainstay--funny for decades.

Eh. I'm on the fence with this whole thing...

You don't become a successful stand-up comedian simply by throwing down f-bombs on stage. If there's not serious comedic chops behind it, you can bomb just as easily with cuss words as clean.

I do agree that there's a certain extra "degree of difficulty" score that I'll give to a comedian who can work 100% clean and still nail it.

Maybe it's just that we grew up as descendants of a Puritan-influenced society and a few cuss words out there loosen people up and make them giddy. It's not going to sustain a comedy act, but it doesn't always, frankly, hurt...

As Tommy Tiernan said, "the English language is like a brick wall between me and you, and f$%k is my chisel":

Well, that's a damn ROAST. What would you expect?

Insult comedy is a thing--just ask Lisa Lampanelli.

Roasts are basically an insult comedy festival.

Uhh, he's on the list to be voted on because he's generally considered a great one.  If I omitted him, everyone would ask why he wasn't on it.

I really enjoy her - clean, hokey, etc.  Plays up her accent.

I guess I just don't see 2 groups - cussers and clean....they're either funny or not.

This illustrates my disdain of "lists of top ten X".  Everyone has an opinion of course, and no one has heard every possible candidate enough to have an opinion.  Maybe the best comic is at the Marriot in Evanston, Indiana.

It's as subjective as best BBQ  or best wine.  Lists can be entertaining and even useful at times, but they are just lists, someone's opinion.  We started out to try the "top ten restaurants in ATL, according to several lists.  we dined at Numero Uno on several of the lists, and it was fine.  Haven't been back, it was fine though.  And not terribly expensive either.

i'll echo this.

the words don't bother me. i'm no stranger to them myself at times. and risque topics aren't necessarily off topic either. but when those are the "stars" of the show, it just isn't as funny. carlin, pryor and robin williams are all masters of story telling and fun entertainment. they all used a good bit of language, but it wasn't the point of the joke.

it's the same with movies, to me. and i don't mean a couple "damn" or something. unless it's fitting in the situation (i.e. lots of language in war movies) then i just don't enjoy it. it's a crutch that's unnecessary and detracts from the story.
