Says the guy who posted the list.

Joan Rivers was good back in the day. She'd be the primary one I'd probably consider for inclusion on this list. Possibly Moms Mabley, but I'm basing that purely on reputation as I don't know her work.

There are a lot of really funny ones. Some of the bigger names would of course be Paula Poundstone, Sarah Silverman, Nikki Glaser, Whoopi, Roseanne, Margaret Cho, Ellen Degeneres...

I'm a big-time Kathleen Madigan fan. She's freakin' hilarious.
lucille ball, not sure if she did much standup, but she was maybe the first female that was a giant in comedy.

what is a comedian if not an entertainer who makes you laugh? why should martin, robin, and kaufman be removed from consideration because their act was an event more than a show?

martin and robin are both known more for their comedy on screen than on stage, but they were both masters of the craft of stand up and got their start doing it.
Again, it might be an arbitrary distinction, and it's one that I'm adding... Just like I discount someone like Carrot Top for being a prop comic [and not being funny], and discount someone like Jim Carrey for being an impressionist/character guy. That's just, like, my opinion, man... :57:

I really enjoy stand-up, and consider it one of the most pure art forms that exist. I view what these other guys are doing as perhaps a sub-genre within the stand-up world. There are more than enough pure stand-ups to fill a Rushmore, so I simply didn't think we needed to go into sub-genres.

Yeah, I did a search for female comedians and she was there, along with Carol Burnett, and quite a few others...

For me that gets into the same "Moms Mabley" territory--I've never heard their on-stage routines, so I can't really speak with any authority.

On the male side, another one would be Bob Newhart. I understand he was a hell of a comedian, but it was before my time and before "stand-up specials" were all that popular, so the only real memory I have of him was reruns of Newhart with Larry, and his brother Daryl and his other brother Daryl.

I'm a big-time Kathleen Madigan fan. She's freakin' hilarious.
Is she the northern Minnesota accent one?  I love her.

There are tons of funny women, but as many here seem not to get, the MT RUSHMORE of anything is the best of the best of the best.  Guys have listed like 70 comedians on this thread.....for 4 spots.   It's silly.

Yes, I completely forgot about one of the funniest women in the history of comedians. Lucile Ball is a giant as far as that goes. Not sure she did much stand up, but he comedic talents were off the chart.

Gilda Radner deserves a mention. Bob Hope probably deserves a little more love, too. A better one-liner comedian than Rodney Dangerfield (and one-liners were Dangerfield's whole act). Billy Crystal was really funny, too.

I went with Chappelle, and Robin Williams would be next on my list (regardless of Hope or the women who are missing).

Kaufman never worked for me, but he certainly understood his act and people loved it.

Eddie Murphy was definitely good--but not Mount Rushmore good. I feel similarly about Seinfeld--he's really good at observational comedy, without relying on shock value. That's impressive, but not Mount Rushmore impressive.

Shock value is a big thing in comedy. When I was a kid, race and drugs were big topics. Nowadays sex seems to be a big, driving force.

Eddie Murphy's Delirious was very funny, but would it have been funny without the F bombs?

My favorite comedian is Brian Regan.  I saw him him live several years ago and basically couldn’t catch my breath from laughing for about 90 minutes.  And he’s 100 percent clean.  Not that I seek that out because there are plenty of raunchy comedians I love, but I think it’s harder to be that funny and still be clean.

And I loved the Seinfeld show.  To this day I still have a couple of friends and we’ll just randomly texts each other quotes from that show.
