Red card was bullshit, hopefully rescinded by FIFA. Still won, and Belgium is full of old men.
Yeah that red card was complete crap.  Really hope to see it rescinded on appeal.

Yeah, that's not a thing.  No appeals.  No corrections.

It was funny to see the youtube live simulcasts of the game, where they can't show it, but they do play-by-play and have graphics and stuff.  They spent the whole time explaining rules to all the American fans watching.  And then after the red card, explaining all about that and then directing the viewers to focus on the game at hand and stop worrying about the next game.  Up only 1 and a man down, they had to keep encouraging them to focus on the game being played.

Our soccer IQ as a country is sub-80.

It IS a thing in professional league soccer like the EPL, and even USA's coach Pochettino speculated after the match about a possible appeal.  A red card suspension is obviously a seriously punitive penalty, which is why the appeals process exists in professional soccer.

That it doesn't exist in World Cup international play is disappointing but not surprising.

That was a great win for United States.

Tough call on that red card, but they show a lot of grit going ahead by another goal and getting the win.

USA's manager Pottechino has the most wins in USMNT history with 3.

We'll see. Apparently there is no challenge to say the ref was wrong. But they may be able to challenge it in other ways, like if VAR messed up. It is very confusing. They have taken away yellow cards and you can appeal suspensions of some red cards.

Well, even if there is somehow an appeal, I don't have much faith they'll reverse it.  That's just not the sort of thing that seems to happen with large bureaucratic governing bodies like FIFA.

USMNT is just going to have to make sure they score without him.

Belgium is one of my normal rooting interests since I spent a lot of time there and really love the country... but... not this time, mijn vrienden!

Once the game is over in World Cup play, nothing is being changed.  Period.  I don't like soccer and I'm no authority, but it's just the facts.  This "yeah, but"-ism is silly.

Eh, I disagree.

IQ measures ability to learn. For most Americans our soccer IQ is TBD because we have never tried.

Our soccer knowledge is nearly nonexistent because we don't care.

I clicked on this post because I couldn't believe we had 13 pages of discussion of soccer so I wondered if we were talking about something more interesting like . . . Anything else.

Question it all you like.  But exactly - even me, with zero interest or special knowledge of the game took the 4 seconds out of my day to look it up and am (gasp) sharing the knowledge with you here.
How dare I.

I hated that offsides call on Croatia. If you missed it, basically they used "ball technology" to show Croatia touched the ball, even if it was imperceptible on television.
