Targeting is still the best intentions/worst call in the game

It seemed crazy to me for Purdue to pass on 3rd and 30. You aren't picking up the 1st down anyway so, IMHO, you need to run there to at least cost PSU a timeout.

We're watching PSU Purdue here. It's more interesting than the game here.

Someone explain to me why Purdue didn't run a draw play just to force a timeout.

This will seem like 2nd-guessing, but yeah, from about 5:30 left in the game to now, I'm yelling at the TV that it's not a 7-on-7 drill when you have the lead and the ball late.  Whoever is calling their plays.....pfffft......Purdue fans should feel like Nebraska fans on that onside kick the other day.
Not only calling nothing but passes, but O'Connell is almost solely throwing to tightly-covered guys and then that lob that the TE almost had......WTF?!???   Run the ball.  Run the ball.

In the last 6 minutes of this game, Purdue did everything they could to lose it.

Penn St drew a tough opener, and they got the W.  Good on them.

But what Purdue did on offense to end the game could be problematic going forward.  I think the announcers said they had the worst ypc average in the country last year?  2.8 ypc?  Okay.....what do you think the coaches have been saying to the offensive linemen all off-seasaon.  Every tough workout, every long practice, ever goal line drill, etc.....
"we're gonna need you guys"
"we're gonna have to earn the tough yards"
and on
and on
.
In crunch time, with the lead, with 5 min left, what did the coaches do?  Pass.  Pass.  Pass.  Pass.  Evidence that they didn't trust any improvement in their OL.  Didn't even give them the chance.  THAT is the problem.  Maybe those OL were amped up to put a game away on the ground.  Wanted to see that defeated look across the LOS.....but they weren't even given the chance.

Maybe I'm being melodramatic, but if I'm a Purdue OL, I'm pissed at my OC.

yeah I caught the last 4-5 mins of that game....holy shit. It was a bad. How about not calling a time out on the final drive and letting like idk 20 seconds run off the clock...wtf?

This strikes me as an interesting dance. Penn State is going to have an extra guy in the box, and they’re going to play press across. Would have liked to see a few more crossers, but coverage is going to probably be tight.

So the thing is, when you generate those two-yard runs into a crowded box, you’ll be battered on these bird for turtling. Whether it be on 1st and or 2nd and 9 (maybe 2nd and 4 escapes that, maybe). Purdue took avoiding that to the extreme, clearly. But if you go three and out after two runs set up 3rd and 7, th flack they catch isn’t much different.

I'm not saying run 3 dive plays and punt.....simply don't pass EVERY time.  Especaily when your QB is treating every pass as a 50/50 back-shoulder throw.  If O'Connell is planning on playing that way all season, he'll toss 15+ INTs.

Purdue didn't make PSU use any timeouts for a drive and a half while holding the lead late and possessing the ball.

Jeff Brohm's performance down the stretch was borderline malpractice. OAM, it would have been better to run 3 dive plays, force PSU to burn their timeouts, and punt than do what Purdue did on their last drive with the lead.

I'm no great fan of PSU, but I'm fine with Purdue out of the division race, and seizing defeat from the has of victory in the process.

Also, that coaching performance meant that the Puke 6 was for naught.
