I don't recall Canada forest fire smoke coming down into Iowa as a youngster
also don't recall the "northern Lights" ever coming down into Iowa as a youngster
Canada no longer manages its forests properly.

I don't know what could be done to manage forests as vast as those in Canada.

My guess is for the most part they are left to do their thing on their own.

What was the weather event that grounded all of the Atlanta flights?

The other badger has assured me on FB in the past that CA's forest problems are federal lands and it was Trump 1.0's fault they had forest fires.

I don't recall hearing about Saharan dust before last year.

I've heard about it roughly since I went to work in the medical community a few years back because it's a factor in people's allergy problems.  But they were probably talking about it before then and I just didn't know it.

I only heard about it affecting hurricanes from 847 a few weeks ago.  If I ever listened to any meteorologists I probably would've heard about that before now.

We had some really bad storms roll through that evening.  We weren't hit here very hard, but it was still pretty hard.  They had to evacuate the control tower, and they had hail, so all the planes had to be inspected for hail damage.  It also was a very busy travel weekend.

The main freeway in Atlanta flooded and stopped traffic, it was really coming down for a while.
