Thailand Nights

Refreshed by a nap, I head out to walk the beachfront, which, much like Waikiki, stretches for about two miles with hotel towers rising across the busy road along the sands. The ground floors of the passing hotel towers are lined with currency exchanges, jet-ski rental stands, street food carts, night market huts selling souvenirs, and many massage parlors whose large staffs of Thai masseuses each color-coordinate their spa uniforms in bright oranges and fiery reds and electric blues. They stand in the way of foot traffic, promising good times. The day’s heavy humidity has given way to the breezier night.

After about a mile, the road angles slightly away from the shore, and storefronts of a seedier tone take over both sides of the street. Cannabis lounges—pot smoke drifts beneath green, fluorescent signs shaped like marijuana leaves; firing ranges—pellet guns modeled after assault rifles fire at paper targets; snake handlers—a man poses for pictures with a white python draped across his shoulders; dunk tanks—pairs of Thai girls cheer on bystanders trying to sink them for a few bucks. Like the brightly uniformed masseuses, bar staffs of color-coordinated Thai girls stand by the dozen, shoulder to shoulder, in colorful gym- and swimwear outside what are labeled by neon signs as Go-Go bars; they invite passing groups of Russian and Indian men to come on inside.

Places I'd like to visit again:

Zion NP
Glacier NP
Sancerre, France
Beaune, France
Chamonix, France

Florence, or Firenze, Italy, either one.
Hawaii (Volcano NP when it's erupting)

Places we have scheduled to visit:

Amsterdam (June)
Hilton Head (December)
North Port, FL  (January)

Places I'm looking at for next year:

Cooperstown, NY and environs
Shenandoah Valley area (which could make the top list)
Kauai (never been)

My wife wants to go to Paris (again) for a week plus, then drive to Switzerland and about.  I'm mostly OK with that, she claims I have not really seen Paris, whatever that means.  We'd probably stop a few days in Burgundy ....

If I'm around, you gotta give me a ring when you're in North Port.

My phone number is the same it's been since 1993.

We get a break Sunday and Monday, January 10-11 I think.  I’m usually quite sore.

Russians In Thailand

The street ends back toward the beachfront at the base of a pier. I turn around for another pass of the neon nightlife of firing ranges, dunk tanks, and Go-Go girls cheerleading the passing foot traffic. Amidst these dense crowds, two white girls approach me, both taller in stilettos and wearing formal evening gowns of more subdued colors – faded pink, mint green. They address me in Russian before switching to broken English. As part of insisting that I try their “pub,” I’m shown three menus: #1) Drinks, #2) Lady Drinks (more expensive, presumably obligated for your assigned partner – see #3), and #3) an untitled listing of favors. Priced in the local currency, a private dance (no touching) is roughly $60, a private dance (touching ok) is roughly $90, an accompanied shower is roughly $150, and the prices and corresponding favors just get worse going down the rest of the list. The neon sign above the entrance of their “pub” flashes red: Russian Girls. Waving off the Russians, a Thai girl is next to stand in my way with another laminated menu, this one titled Live Sex Shows. I’m guessing I can point to its graphic photos of differing poses and then be led into some sort of peepshow theater?

Streets Overtaken By Prostitution

Exiting the street back to the beachfront, it is then I notice, while walking the beach side of the road, that the length of the sidewalk is lined with Thai prostitutes, standing at ten- and twelve-foot intervals, one after another, between every palm tree, every step of the way for as far as I can see down the beachfront. There are THOUSANDS UPON THOUSANDS of prostitutes out tonight. Is the entire city a Red Light District?! Seeing a few ahead of me approached by Russian and Indian men, I decide to detour off the beachfront and follow a sign to a night market. The streets away from the beachfront narrow into shadowy alleyways and not only do dozens more prostitutes wait beneath neon signage, but standing in front of storefronts for bars and massage parlors are working staffs of Go-Go girls and masseuses. Walking these alleyways alone is nothing I’m ready for. I’m chorused at: “hansum!” I’m reached for; my wrists are grabbed, and to shake their grasp and press my way forward, I raise my arms above my head, as though stepping through the walk-through metal detectors at airports.

My wife has been talking about Thailand. I just showed her this.

It's now a no-go.

Yeah, I have no desire to go to Thailand again. Which is a shame because it's a beautiful country.

Understanding Thailand’s Widespread Prostitution

To start, Thailand is overwhelmingly Buddhist, and has been so for centuries, with the latest census indicating that among the nation’s 67 million citizens, 63 million identify as Buddhist (94%). At no point in Thailand’s history has its small presences of Christianity and Islam combined for over ten percent of religious affiliation (currently 6%). Much like Christianity and Islam, Buddhism promotes patriarchal social structures and traditional family ideals while also revering motherhood. Where Buddhist influence may allow greater tolerance for prostitution, it has also seemed less inclined to criminalize prostitution through law or drive prostitution from public view by perpetuating social stigma.

As far as societal attitudes toward prostitution, “Among many Thai people, there is a general attitude that prostitution has always been, and will always be, a part of the social fabric of Thailand” (to quote Wikipedia). Part of this general acceptance is due to the economic benefit prostitution provides to households. Where families of course urge their daughters against taking up prostitution, the extra money sent by prostitutes back to their families has, over the decades, softened views against adult daughters that do. All the while, Thailand’s central government has consistently voiced defiance against outside criticism and pressures against their nation’s overseas reputation for prostitution, with a recent president declaring it nobody’s business if a tourist wants to find a prostitute. And not a few high-ranking politicians have earned their wealth and names through owning and growing their own networks of Go-Go Bars and brothels.

Unfortunately, tolerance and defiance have at times left Thailand’s large prostitution industry particularly exposed, as during the HIV/AIDS crisis of the 1980s and 90s, when prostitutes in Thailand died in greater numbers and at higher rates than elsewhere across Southeast Asia. The HIV/AIDS crisis also reduced the practice among married Thai men to take up prostitutes as their “minor wife.” And in more recent decades, foreign crime syndicates have taken root within Thailand’s prostitution networks, exploiting them for money laundering and human trafficking.

Agree, unless it's work sending me, I won't by choice visit Thailand again...

Second World Thailand

An official definition exists for the First World – example states: Japan, Scandinavia, Singapore, Canada, Korea, Switzerland, Orange County? An official definition also exists for the Third World – example states: Haiti, Yemen, East/West/Central/Southern Africa, Afghanistan. Comparable definitions designating developed and undeveloped nations are used by organizations such as the United Nations’ World Health Organization and World Food Programme, as well as the World Bank and the Global Livability Index. However, what’s strange is there’s no definition formalized for the greater part of the world’s population living in the broad middle—the Second World. Example states: Mexico, Eastern Europe, The Balkans, Brazil, Turkey, The Appalachians? The undefined Second World is a mix of the two more pronounced upper and lower bounds, and it is better defined by observation – what First World amenities exists among scenes closer to the Third World?

Thailand fits squarely into this Second World, and on our morning taxi ride from the hotel to the ports, the scenes are prevalent. Looking into the green-blue coastal waters while waiting for my driver, dozens of luxury yachts are anchored in the distance, keeping clear of the few abandoned freighter ships grounded offshore, too large and rusted over to be moved without breaking apart. The Hilton where we are soon picked up rises, alongside neighboring luxury hotels and condominium towers, twenty and thirty levels above the morning’s streets of wild dogs roving the curbsides for scraps from food carts. The morning traffic buzzes with multitudes of scooters. More scooters pull alongside our taxi, their destination is school; on the backs of many ride blue-uniformed schoolchildren, driven by a parent. Thick bundles of powerlines sag in tangled masses above the sidewalks.
