Back from a 3 night trip into the mountains.  We toured Gibb's Gardens en route, nice day, very early spring but they had daffodils galore, it was impressive.  This place is quite impressive overall

We stayed 2 nights at the Amicalola Lodge in the state park, which is pretty nice, but had a very mediocre dinner in their restaurant (which for lunch has a decent buffet).

We drove around north Georgia the next day, found a nice wine bar in Blue Ridge (which is an interesting touristy town).  Came back through Dahlonega and had a nice dinner this time at a place we know.  Dahlonega is "famous" for having the first gold rush in the US.  Hiked a couple miles at Woody Gap;

Next day we drove to Highlands, NC, stopping in Clarksville and later Clayton, which is another pretty nice touristy town that once was drying up and blowing away.  The winery I wanted to check out was closed for the season.  Had lunch at a Cuban place that was really good.

Found a beer rooftop in Clayton:

Our route guidance to the motel was ... goofy, finally found it, way  up in the mountains, I thought it was nice enough but the wife said it was only OK.  They have a steak house which was busy and quite good, Oak Steakhouse, small chain.  Left the next day stopping in Clayton again, the weather was turning on us, so finally just drove home.  Hit major traffic in ATL, huh.

Breaking news: The Department of Homeland Security has reinstated the Global Entry program after suspending it in late February because of the partial government shutdown.

Interesting. I wonder if they will come back when the new International terminal opens and the current international turns into the Spirit/Jet Blue/Frontier/Sun Country/Allegiant etc. terminal.

Spent the weekend on Siesta Key with some friends who rented a place for 6 weeks.

That island is really nice. You could not tell it took a direct hit from Milton and storm surge from Helene about 18 months ago.

Beautiful beach, great food, nice vibe. The view of the Intracoastal was stunning. Lots of boats to look at.

Saturday was a bit hectic. It's "move out" day so all the spring breakers have to leave their places by 10AM. Then the new ones can move in at 4PM. Traffic was really tough.

I'd like to visit in the summer, to be honest.

The coldest months?

I would advise November or April.

yes, it will be 70 degrees warmer than NW Iowa

I'm not interested in visiting in Florida's best weather - interested in escaping Iowa's worst

I'm in North Port, FL, every January, and the weather usually is pretty nice, it does rain some.

That's actually pretty rare in January. Rain season is really May-October.
