The Irish have a chance to beat the Buckeyes and even make the playoffs.
Agreed and those two things are closely related.

Beating the Buckeyes would severely diminish the chances of the B1G putting two in the CFP which helps open a spot for ND and even if Ohio State "only" goes ~9-3 it would still be a quality win feather 🪶 in their cap.

If they lose to Ohio State then they have to be perfect the rest of the way and hope that the B1G only produces one team with one or fewer losses.

I'm going to take a middle position here between @Mdot21 and @Honestbuckeye although, to be fair, I think what I'm about to say may be what Honest means:

If this was my team, Ohio State instead of USC, right now I'd be concerned but hopeful. I would see giving up 28 points and about 400 yards to SJSU as concerning but with so many new faces on D I'd be hopeful that maybe it was mostly growing pains and/or issues that can be fixed.
Oh I am totally over-reacting to week 0 and Honest is probably more correct than I am lol.

But I'm a big benefit of the doubt guy. Lincoln Riley has a long and storied history of being a head coach who is offense obsessed, doesn't care about defense, and coaching lots of teams with awful defenses. Alex Grinch has a long and storied history of being an awful DC. I don't think anybody should have reason to be hopeful that either of them will figure it out. Riley doesn't care- his motto is I'm just going to outscore everyone. And Grinch is just not a good defensive co-ordinator.

Those are fair points. I'm not disagreeing and really, I don't think @Honestbuckeye is either. It is more a matter of us not completely writing off USC's defense YET.

Notre Dame's QB, Sam Hartman, transfer from Wake Forest, is very good.  The Irish have a chance to beat the Buckeyes and even make the playoffs.
yeah he looks like the first real life QB they've had in SO long. Dude has never played behind an OL like that either at WF. ND has some dudes up front....Alt is going to be a 1st rd tackle. Hartman could be for ND in 2023 what Kenneth Walker III was for Michigan State in 2021...complete game changer on offense. Still early don't want to get too over the skis as it was Navy- but ND did what they were suppose to- took care of business- and Hartman looked legit.

The week-0 game most interesting to me as an Ohio State fan was Notre Dame's Wipeout of Navy.

Looking at the stats to confirm what I saw of it a few things stand out:

First, fantastic performance by Hartman and the Irish passing game. They had 23 pass attempts with nothing bad: No INT's and no sacks. They had as many TD passes (4) as incomplete passes. Say what you will about Navy's defense, those stats would be good against air.

Second, their rushing stats aren't jump-off-the-page great, but notice that they did their damage without the benefit of any long plays.

Their feature back had 16 for 95 (5.9 avg) with one TD and as a team they had 32 for 191 (6.0 avg) with two TD's. Note, however, that Estime's long was only 13 and the team long was only 21. That tells me that they were getting 4-6 darn near every carry.

It appears that Notre Dame will be a tough out and a good rehearsal for the final game on the schedule.
that OSU @ ND game is shaping up to be epic. we'll find out if Hartman has legit changed life on that ND offense vs what should be an excellent OSU D. Also going to be fascinating to see who the OSU starting QB is that game and how he plays in a hostile big-time road game.

Yeah- we don’t even know what OSU looks like yet.
starting the season with a conference road game.  Never easy no matter the opponent.  The last 2 times they did that- breaking in a new QB- they were down at halftime but came back for relatively easy wins.

Word is, McCord is a tad more polished and accurate, but Brown is much more capable of extending a play and ripping off a big run.
Since they are breaking in 3 new Oline, the athletic guy might be a better choice.
Get your facts first, then you can distort them as you please.

I'm always partial to the younger, more athletic, talented guy- but Ryan Day will make the right choice for Ohio State to win games this season.

Might be better to play the younger guy for the long term future- but the coach has to try to win every game every season or the coach won't have a future....why Jeem went with a more polished JR Cade over a more talented true frosh JJ in '21.

That will be baptism by fire 🔥 for the tOSU QB.

The Buckeyes start at Indiana this weekend but:
  • It is Indiana,
  • Memorial Stadium is basically Horseshoe-West when Ohio State comes to town, and
  • It is game #1 and it looks like they will still be sorting out who the starter is.
Between that and the trip back to Indiana (the State) for the Notre Dame game the Buckeyes have two home games that they could probably win with me at QB.

Then they go to a VERY* hostile environment against what looks to be a CFP contender at night. Yay!

In terms of just how hostile, Notre Dame fans are beyond hungry for a win over Ohio State. The Irish are 2-5 all-time against the Buckeyes. That isn't all that bad until you realize that the two wins were during the Great Depression while FDR was President, before the Germans bombed Pearl Harbor.

The Irish won both of a H&H in 1935 and 1936. My grandmother claimed to have attended the 1935 game in Columbus with her then boyfriend. They later married so allegedly my grandparents attended the 1935 loss to Notre Dame. I have my doubts because my grandmother lived to 103 and one of the benefits of extreme longevity is that eventually you reach an age where you can make things up because nobody is around to call you out on it. OTOH, she wasn't a football or sports fan and my grandfather was so he might have taken her.

I read somewhere that one of those two was voted either the or one of the game(s) of the century when CFB reached 100 years old in the late 1960's.

After those two the Buckeyes and Irish didn't play for 60 years. Then Ohio State won both of a H&H when I was in school. I attended the 1995 win 60 years after my grandparents "attended" the 1935 loss. After that the Buckeyes beat Notre Dame in a couple of Fiesta Bowls in 06 and 16 (2005 and 2015 seasons) then Ohio State pulled ahead 2-1 all-time in the 'Shoe.

The teams are tied all-time in South Bend with the Irish winning 7-2 in 1936 and the Buckeyes winning 29-16 in 1996.

The youngest Notre Dame fan who was alive for a win over tOSU is almost 90 and the youngest ND fan with any recollection of a win over tOSU us pushing 100. Yeah, they're hungry!

You forgot to mention the new green uni for the Irish just for that game.

A decade of Victory over Penn State.

All in since 1969
