Speaking of tv cars, I just looked this up, and the Googlez Overlord says the Winchester brothers from the show Supernatural drove a 1967 Chevy Impala. The one always driving was very proud of that car. How sporty is that supposed to be? Maybe he was just proud of inheriting it from his dad, but the show acted like that car could scoot and scramble when they needed to get out of Dodge.

The Impala was a cool car, I don't think it was ever really considered a muscle car because it was too big and heavy. In 1967 it was a 4-door family car or cruiser. But I do think the SS version was considered to be a bit of a beast, maybe the closest thing to a "sports sedan" that the US had at the time? The Supernatural car was a 67, but then of course Eazy E's famous rap song "Boyz N The Hood" mentioned the 64 Impala and popularized it within urban culture (even though his actual car was a 63).

Edit--Actually there were 2-door Impalas in 67. The Supernatural one was a 4-door though.

This thread has been fun, I'd forgotten how much I really like the muscle cars of the late 60s and early 70s. I'm sure they're almost all complete dogs by modern standards but I reckon they were considered pretty sporty for their time.

Impalas usually were just family haulers, some with 6 cylinder engines, many with 283/307/327 etc. They weren't fast, but the famous 409 was pretty quick, and rare. There were Impala SS models in some years.

My Mom drove a Belaire 327 for year, I learned on it. The Belaire was in between the base Biscayne and Impala.

We also had a 1965 Malibu with a 283 and the Powerglide and a 1968 Nova 307 with that crappy transmission that I inherited.

I think there's a lot of nostalgia for the era, in the 90s the urban culture turned heavily to these cruisers as the sources for their lowriders and general around town cars. It kind of makes sense, they weren't particularly rare so they were probably pretty cheap, 30 years later. And now 30 years aftet that, the 90s are considered long-past and old-school for the current generation of youngsters.

Yup. Some of the 60s cars looked pretty neat, prebumper regs. I however do recall spending a fair amount of time doing maintenance on them. Plugs, points, condenser, oil, coolant, belts, .... stuff needed changing often.

I found an article talking about the '67 Impalas use for Supernatural.  Apparently creator and showrunner Eric Kripke originally envisioned the main characters getting around in some version of a 60's Mustang, but after talking with his neighbor who was a car enthusiast, the neighbor convinced him to consider the Impala due to its trunk space, as Kripke had explained to him the car would be sort of a home base, and needed to house a lot of weapons and equipment in their traveling fight against dark forces.

It says the character even states the engine specs in an early episode, which are not overly impressive, even for the time. However, it also says several of the actual cars used in filming production were souped up well beyond those stated specs, I presume in order to get better shots peeling out, appear more impressive in scenes, etc.

So like everything else on TV, sporty cars can't be trusted.

My i s c & a aggie wife loved the show and I watched a good bit of it with her. It went on for like eleventy-leven seasons and I eventually wore out on it, but I always liked how they used the car in the show. It could almost be viewed as another character in some ways.

And thinking about it now, there are plenty of scenes where more than two people are piling into that car or scampering away from it in a hurry. Those scenes would have looked mighty clunky and awkward had 3 or 4 people been entering and exiting a 2-door.

My parents had a '64 Impala SS 2-door with the 327 when I was born. White with a light blue top, it was a sweet ride. Shut my fingers in the door as an accident-prone tyke on occasion.

Dad worked at a parts store, and "borrowed" headers and took it to the drag strip one weekend. Only thing that beat him in the small block category was a black version of the same, but he thought that particular one was less than stock.

Hate that they have been completely turned almost completely into low-riders.

I had a GF in Chapel Hill who had a 1969 Ford Galaxie convertible with a 351. Man that was fun, we'd ride around with her slid over on the bench seat on nice days cruising.

She was working on a master's in geology of all things. One day, out of the blue, she said we couldn't see each other any more. I was unhappy, she was really cute and smart and sensible, I thought.

Somehow I had left a kitchen chair at her apartment and one day she shows up to "return the chair". One thing led to another and I thought we were back on, but that was it. I still miss that car ....
