I have never owned either.  They have nothing that appeals to me.  

Have owned 5 BMWs.  Never an issue with any of them. Now you can say I never put more than 35k miles on them- but reliability starts at mile 1. 
To be fair- have only owned 1 Mercedes- and it was a beast ( in a good way).  But it had annoying little things, like trunk release button not working, and some rattling on the interior.  I will admit to being quite picky though.

To each their own. Different people have different needs.

I love my Benz - 12 y/o, looking brand new, extremely comfortable, with no rattles to speak of and a power plant that would dump heads into the back seat if not for the head rests. (4Matic helps with that. She just jumps off the line.)

It's all good, if you have what you like.

The next birthday is 60. Maybe I'll get that AMG S63 for myself. 

But I doubt it.

Hope you do.  The one I had was INCREDIBLE to put through its paces.  Fastest car ( from a stand still) I have ever owned- and that is saying something.

From a standstill- it was faster than my Shelby Gt 500, which was light and had 750 HP.  

Remember- the MB has 4-matic.    Power to all 4 wheels.  It felt like you were getting a facelift when you launched that car.

From a side-by-side Rolling race, The Mustang was the fastest car I’ve ever owned.
