GM Prez Wants Next-Gen Chevy Camaro to Be the Opposite of Ford's EV Mustang

If it has four doors, the other differences would seem minor to me.

Just in the last week was leaning towards buying a Mustang until I drove several of them. Fun to punch the gas, but the car doesn't drive especially well. For a "fun" car, it just isn't enough fun.

Never owned one, but several friends and family members have, and that was my general impression of them as well.

I like my daughter's Mustang pretty well.  Just curious, what current cars do you consider to be fun to drive?

Yeah, they point out that coupe sales are basically a rounding error in the US. That doesn't mean that EVERY GODDAMN CAR has to have 4 doors.

And then they say they want it to be a "fun" little runabout, not massive horsepower and track-slaying performance.

Nah.

Keep the Camaro a coupe. Sell them to the over-testosterone'd early-20s bros who are going to buy it BECAUSE it's faster than their neanderthal brains can handle and BECAUSE it's wildly impractical but it's unapologetically exactly what it is.

Don't do what Ford did and create a "pony car" EV that's perfect for soccer moms.

I want the EV Camaro to be a car that attracts the sort of buyer that I don't want my daughter to date.

The Mach E is a Mustang in name only.  It's not capturing people who want an EV version of a Mustang (if any such people exist).  Its buying demographic is not a muscle car or a sportscar demographic.

Seems like the EV Camaro is trying to split the difference and I suspect it will be a failure.  I don't think the kinds of guys who want a muscle car, want an EV version of a muscle car.  They're petrol-heads, not ampere-heads.

The EV supercar market is also not developing very quickly for the same reason, I'd suggest.

My brother had two Camaros over the years, the first was a blue 1981 Camaro Rally Sport, and the second was a gray 1988 Camaro Sport Coupe (his was not an IROCZ like the picture but looked the same otherwise):

I dunno... I suspect that as they start to realize just how fast some of these EVs can be, that'll change. I think ultimately that crowd is attracted to the acceleration numbers, and any allegiance to petrol will wear off.

I've never been one of those guys, but it seems they value the roar of a loud engine too, and will remove mufflers and anything else they can think of so that the people in the next county can hear it.  I have little knowledge and experience with EVs, but it seems like they wouldn't offer that.

Yeah I think MDT is right-- it's not just about speed.  It's about the sound and the smell, for a lot of those guys.  As EVs become ubiquitous and pervasive, that might wear off, but I don't see it happening any time soon.

And I think if it were really all about speed, then we'd see a larger shift toward EVs in the supercar/hypercar market, but so far that's just not happening.  There's more to the culture than just the 0-60 times.
