This sorta fits in with my thread on "rankings" (ugh).  Our friend from France who comes here pretty often is a devotee of Michelin stars.  He goes out of his way to try them, of course at some expense.  I personally do lift an eyebrow at the listings, OK fine, but don't really rush to try each place that got a star just because of that.  The preferences of whoever Michelin sends to test a place likely are different from my own.

The one Michelin star restaurant my wife and I have eaten was both the most expensive and most amazing meal I've eaten in the US. It was a Italian tasting menu with wine pairings at an Italian restaurant on the Magnificent Mile. 

Sadly, the restaurant did not make it out of COVID.

Sadly, many places up there didn't make it out of Covid.

We had lunch at a 3 star in Marseille, to me, it was awful, not just mediocre, but bad.  I just quit eating after about the third course.  The food was "pretty", I guess, like one item was served on top of some small rock.  I didn't want to go in the first place, so perhaps my attitude was bad, but the food really was not good.  My wife agreed much of it was too salty but claimed some of the later courses were good.  

I got some weird looks from the chef that day.

The one star here is excellent, if pricey.

I always joked about how tiny the portions were at super high-end restaurants. Turns out, for tasting menus, it's a necessity.

We got to go to Spiaggia in 2019 when my wife and I went to spend a week-ish in Chicago (plus drive to Purdue for a game). 

It's funny, that day we saw Graham Elliott at the art museum, saw Tony Mantuano taking a phone call randomly walking up Michigan Ave (not near Spiaggia), and then saw Joe Flamm in the restaurant who had won Top Chef already but hadn't opened his own place yet, so he was still a chef at Spiaggia. 

A day full of famous chefs lol.
