recent bama nominations:

mac jones, najee harris, devonta smith, jaylen waddle - heisman winner, 2 more finalists, and maybe best of them all got hurt half way through season.

tua, smith, waddle, jeudy.

wr only, 2018 and 2019 had waddle, jeudy, ruggs, and smith. - heisman, 2 belitnikoffs, maxwell, walter camp, hornung awards, sec poty, sec sp team poty, sec foty, AP poty, sport news poty, all 1st rounders (6, 10, 12, 15th). ruggs has unfortunately tarnished this group with his dumbassery off the field.

as for some big uglies, 2012 bama oline had warmack (unanimous AA, rd 1 at guard), fluker (AA, rd 1), kuandjio (consensus AA next season, rd 2), and barrett jones (2 time AA, 1 unanimous and 1 consensus, wuerful, remington, outland, jim parker, and campbell award winner, rd 1 pick).

I don't think linemen really play into it.  I guess they could.  Idk, when one of the 4 horsemen is 'famine', it doesn't really jive.  :57:

I really like the 94 Penn St example - probably the best mish-mash of old timey QB-RB-RB-FB and newfangled QB-RB-WR-WR.  
I don't think people will remember what an all-time great season Ki-Jana Carter had that year - with Salaam going over 2,000 yards and Carter's immediate 'bust' NFL career.  To average 7.8 ypc on 200 carries is sick.

well, the famine is supposed to be the effect the horsemen have on others. could interpret it to be when the big guys come to the table, no one else gets to eat.

1971 Pruitt rushed for 1,760 yards on 196 rushing attempts – an amazing 9.0 average yards per carry. Pruitt scored 18 rushing touchdowns in 1971.

That was a great season and he was a great player, but I've watched a lot of film from back then and that 9.0 ypc from merely great to other-worldly was mostly due to Mildren's late pitches on the option.

He routinely kept it, slightly cut upfield as the pitch man defender was bypassed by Pruitt (good on him), and managed to pitch it out as he's hit to a totally free-and-clear Pruitt.
I think the reason more option offenses couldn't do it was because of Mildren + Pruitt doing it and everyone focused on not allowing that next-level method of play.

Mildren obviously had the trust of the coach to make a good pitch that wouldn't result in a turnover

most option offense coaches don't allow the pitch during contact or even after getting into traffic.  Especially if the QB has gained 5 or 10 yards.

the Sooners relied on "magic" to limit those turnovers and would risk it for the opportunity for the big play.

wasn't usually a big deal because of their defense and their dominance of weaker teams

it did bite them in 1978 in Lincoln - probably saved Osborne's job

I think most Big Ten fans remember how great he was.  IMO, that was the best Big Ten team I've seen.  And with Michigan sort of treading water at the time, OSU unable to get over the top with Cooper, Iowa fading under late Fry, MSU on probation, and nobody yet believing Wisconsin was sustainable, I remember thinking PSU was about to absolutely take over the Big Ten.

The problem was JoePa failed to find a good QB for nearly a decade after Kerry Collins.  They had strong defenses, particularly in the front seven.  They had enough OL and RB.  They didn't necessarily find elite WR after Engram, but they were decent.  But their list of QBs after Collins was brutal for a program of that stature.  Particularly considering watching Jeff Smoker spurn them for MSU and Chad Henne spurn them for Michigan.

They literally went a decade where Zach Mills was the best they had

98-99: Kevin Thompson
00: Rashard Casey
01-04: Zack Mills

I would put that up against any decent P5 programs 10 year QB run of disasters.  Let alone a helmet school.
