I was pondering putchase of a laptop.  I have iPad and use this Dell desk computer.  I'd like to use Word more remotely, but don't like paying for it.

I have Apple watch and phone, should I bite on an Apple laptop?  I don't need anything gamey or fancy.
If you really want the laptop to be tied into the phone ecosystem then sure.  Do you use iTunes or any of the other Apple specific apps regularly?

If not then I wouldn't worry about it.  Sounds like all you're really doing is internet and email.  Plenty of less expensive options than Apple for doing that.

If you don't want to pay for Word you could use Google Docs.

Yup.  I’m used to the Dell OS.   Costco has some nice looking models.

So now I'm apparently going to have to figure out how to switch to using Gmail as a client to access my Outlook-based personal email.

That should be relatively easy.  I do it on my phone's gmail app routinely, a simple toggle to either gmail or outlook.  Setting it up there was quick and painless, and usually gmail's app is not much different than the web-based page accessed via browser, so I assume it's simple there too.

Yeah, I don't think it'll be anything I can't handle.

Mine is a little more complex because I bought my own domain name (my email is basically firstname@lastname.com) so I might need to configure some stuff manually. Not the first time I've had to do it, of course.

If you've been a Windows user for decades, and if as utee suggests you don't care about the Apple integration, it's probably easier to stick with what you know instead of learning your way around a new OS / UI.

Apple does make some pretty high quality products, though. Certainly not a "bad" idea to switch if you just want to try it out.

But given the choice, I'd suggest you stick with Dell, and not steal the food from utee's kids mouths.

Oh yeah, Apple's stuff is good.  We just bought my daughter a Macbook to be her university computer, it's what her specific college recommends and she's already tied into the Apple ecosystem through her ipad, phone, and watch.

BUT... there are things about the GUI and OS that she really doesn't like.  It'll take her some time to get used to it.

I e used Mac book stuff often enough.  My wife uses one.

My stepson used to work for Apple.   I bought a new iPad recently.

I see some $300 laptops that should be fine.

Annoyed. Thought of putting this into the grumpy thread but it's too tech nerdy.

Company just rolled out a new more secure browser that we will use for various browser-based apps instead of Chrome/Firefox/Edge. Might take a little getting used to, but overall it's fine.

Problem is that any time I try to sign into my personal email from Chrome, because my personal email is also Outlook-based, it immediately tries to open it in the secure browser. Which of course puts me into my work account and I can't access personal. So I can't get to my personal via Chrome, and can't get to it via the secure browser. Right now (until I figure something out), the only way I can get to my email is via my phone (which I don't like the tiny screen and lack of physical keyboard), or via another Linux PC I've got at home--either doing it on my TV or via remote desktop into the box from my work PC. Or I guess I could use an old chromebook I've got laying around.
So now I'm apparently going to have to figure out how to switch to using Gmail as a client to access my Outlook-based personal email. :smiley_confused1:

Because at least I can access that from Chrome.
What’s the name of the browser? Only a matter of time before all big corporations switch to that.
