all I can say is that Michael Faraday was a brilliant man.  Though he wouldn't make OAM happy.  He attributed everything he discover to God.  He basically believed in a rational God and because of that he was able to discover scientific truth.  Actually goes much deeper than that.

Most 19th century scientists believed in God, and many 20th.  Faraday was indeed a pioneer.

The issue with Faraday was not his belief in God, as you said most did.  The issue iwas his attribution not just to how he was was able to make the discoveries that he made, i.e. athletics thank God for the ability. But how he was able to make his discoveries, his understanding of who God is gave him the insight into the workings of nature and lead him to his discoveries.  He was probably the most overt of 19th century scientists of more than just a Christian, but it actually influenced his work.

He was effective, whatever his technique and attributions.  One 19th century guy who often is overlooked relative to the depth of his contribution is, IMHO, James Clerk Maxwell.  In terms of being 'ahead of his times', he's up there.

Those of us who had to learn "something" about his equations probably cursed him at times.  Some scientists in my view seemed to have insights that probably would only have happened decades later had they not existed.  Obviously Einstein would likely be first and foremost in that.  His Miracle Year is hard to understand, for me, publishing in such different fields.  

There is another interesting story, to me, in the field of chemistry:

Another chemist who really impressed me is Robert Burns Woodward, who had contributions in a wide variety of interesting fields, in chemistry.

There is a story, probably true, that a postdoc went to work for Woodward and asked about vacations.  Woodward reportedly looked at him askance and said "I usually take Christmas day off....".
