Fax is still a very common way for doctors and other health care providers to trade documents.  It can, of course, be done entirely digitally via computer or smart phone, now.

Healthcare vertical is verrrrryyyy slow to adopt new technologies.  There are some legit reasons for it, same goes for some branches of the government, for similar reasons.

fax machines = analog

digital IP phone systems don't like analog

Email in most cases is not HIPAA compliant. Fax is. Hence it's still very common in healthcare.
