Badge, you should know me well enough by now that I research things extensively before making large decisions so that I'll know in advance what I'm getting myself into...

There are plenty of non-permanent chargers that I won't have to do any complicated installations with. 

I actually think that with my driving habits, I am probably just fine with L1 charging. Which simplifies things greatly based on where the accessible outlets are located.

L1 charging of course is .......  SLOW.  But you'd get maybe 25 miles overnight.  If you don't drive much, maybe a plugin hybrid would be adequate depending.

Are you thinking used?

I don't drive a lot of miles. I'm only going to the office now 3 days/week (~25 mi r/t). Weekly Costco run is another 12 miles r/t. 

There will be more driving when I've got the kids, especially once the oldest goes off to college, as he drives them to/from school most days.

And I'll still have the Jeep if/when I need it. But I think I'll be driving the Jeep when I want to, not that I'll actually "need" to. 

Definitely used. I generally want someone else to take the depreciation hit on a vehicle, not me. And that's especially true on EVs because the way the market has gone on them, the early depreciation is pretty significant. 

A University of Michigan study released last month actually said that used EVs offer a lower total cost of ownership than used ICEV/Hybrid/PHEV: https://news.umich.edu/used-evs-currently-offer-car-buyers-lowest-lifetime-cost-of-ownership/

Yep. First plan is a simple L1 charger. Available on Amazon for $100-150. 

If I determine that isn't viable, I'd opt for splitter circuit for the electric dryer which runs on 240. That plus an L2 charger would maybe be in the $250-400 range all in, and can be easily removed when I move out. They make them such that it seamlessly cuts power to the charger if anyone tries to run the dryer. Only downside to that is you have a max 25 foot charging cable which won't reach to the driveway. I park the Jeep in the garage and it perfectly fits between my rack of dumbbells and the garage door. Charging inside the garage L2 would mean I'd need to move the dumbbell rack as the Mach-E is about 2 feet longer than the Jeep. The garage is pretty full so finding another place for the dumbbells would be inconvenient. And then I'd have to pull the Jeep out to charge in the garage. 

I did find a charger that can go L1/L2 and has a 40' cord
a charger that can go L1/L2 and has a 40' cord... Which might also be an option to charge in the driveway off the dryer 240V circuit. It's slower at a max of 16A (probably how they can get around the 25' cord limit), so will only charge a max of 3.8 kW. But that would be more than enough for my typical needs... 

Slower charging is [as I understand it] gentler on the battery anyway. At least compared to DC fast charging. Not that the 11 kW you can get from a dedicated L2 home charger has been shown to be a problem of course...

I hear you, but...

  • Either the new vehicle or my wife's RX350 is longer than the Jeep, and as mentioned space in the garage is at a premium. If we were going to put a car in because it's "a nicer car", it would be hers. That way if it's raining or something she doesn't have to go out in it to get in her car. I'm a gentleman, after all. But we barely have room for the Jeep in there as it is. 
  • The Jeep gets garage treatment because i usually keep the soft top down [or removed completely], and I don't want to park it outside overnight with the top down. 


So, it'll have to live outdoors.

Man in our house the kids' Mustangs now live in the garage, and my wife's Jeep has been relegated to the driveway.  My pickup has never fit all that great into the garage, although I used to be able to wedge it in when worries of a hail storm came up.  But for the most part it's always been in the driveway regardless, which is fine.

What about the idea of just keeping the Jeep and waiting until ... something really appealing crops up?

We've noted that the EV thing seems to be evolving rapidly, maybe, so in 2 years you might snag a 2026er cheap?

If I lived in a house in CA now, depending, I'd consider a PHEV even though they are very complex, unless range was never going to be a concern for me.  They are usually cheaper than an EV, maybe, ...

Because 2 weeks with the Jeep makes me question how I *ever* went 5 years with that thing as a daily driver!

Just the difficulty Saturday morning of trying to wedge my golf clubs and push cart into the back seat through the little space created when I push the passenger seat up as far as it goes told me this is not something I can do more than a couple months. Especially once fall comes around and I'll have a lot more kid pickup/dropoff at school. 

Nah... I need something a lot sooner than that.

Just pop the top and doors off, loading gear is easy peasey. :)
