I hate cold, I like heat.  You're looking at going from November through March without the average high breaking 50.  October through April without it breaking 60.  Like I said, for me, the livability there, would be about zero.  I could visit in the summer.  I could never live there.

Florida at 1960 SF is definitely propped up by the many mansions of Palm Beach, Miami, Naples, etc.

Most homes here are 900-1800 SF.

Illinois seems low.

I always think about settlers when it comes to climate.  
When was it common knowledge that the further north you go, the colder the climate?  It could be an obvious thing that humanity knew for thousands of years.....or people's scope could have been so small that they had no idea until the last few hundred, right? (yes yes, only in the northern hemisphere)

But if you're settling in VA or MA, you know the winters aren't harsh further south, right?!?!  Were mosquitos and swamps simply deal-breakers?  

It just seems stupid to me that you set up shop having experienced a New England winter and then decide to stay put.  WTF?!?

If you look at the population trends thread... I think mosquitos and swamps WERE deal breakers. 

Especially if you realize that many of those early settlers were from Northern Europe... Obviously the Puritans were English, we had significant German and Dutch migration into the Pennsylvania area, etc... I think to an extent, people were looking for climate they were more familiar with. 

Plus, if they tried to go to where you grew up... That was Spanish-controlled at the time.
