it's a ranking, UHG

most folks shouldn't even bother with it
the folks that do already know what they're looking for

Not everything is a normal distribution.
Almost everything is, or in the case of something like the elite/peak of something, it's just the right tip and not the whole curve.

Average income isn't, of course, as Bernie Sanders has been telling us for 50 years.  But we know why that is.

Not everything is a normal distribution.

Quite a bit in the real world is not a normal distribution.  That's one of the challenges for refining ML algorithms.  A lot of data mining techniques rely on theories which assume normal distributions, and if they don't have that, the models will have problems.  So you wind up having to finesse the variables with logarithms or exponents or other methods until you get something resembling normal.  Then, of course, you have to change your interpretation of the output, but the algorithm will do a better job.

Sure, a lot of things are not normally distributed.  A good number are.  I wouldn't make some broad comment that either one is "almost everything".

An interesting example is height, which is pretty "normal" by sex, but if you don't list by sex you get a skew.  You could list states by size range as well and find a really skewed distribution because many eastern states are quite small and western states are nearly all larger than any eastern state.  The list goes on ... and on, which is why we have statistics.

I probably didn't like statistics, much, back in the day.

It would be mildly interesting to see a plot of FBS team final records, say just wins.  It probably is close to normal in the regular season and then it would skew.  I think it has to be nearly normal regular season aside from FCS opponents.

You could also break it down other ways. Even if you're restricting it to males, if you don't list by ethnicity--and sometimes nationality--you get a skew.

For example, you and I, CD, are on the long tail for adult male height. I can't put 6'5" into this calculator without us putting us both WAY too far out on the long tail... But if I drop it to 6'3", it says that person would be in the 98.73% percentile in the United States but would be in the 99.99% in Japan.

Perhaps there will be a fairly normal distribution amongst ethnic Japanese men or amongst Caucasian American men (i.e. note that the calculator above doesn't break down by race--white and black Americans skew higher than Latin or Asian Americans, and we're a more ethnically diverse country IMHO relative to Japan). But once you put multiple groups together in a single aggregate you can start seeing issues.

If Vandy can take down Bama, might as well believe the Boilermakers will stick it to the Bucknuts and have them calling for Day's head again.
