Sure, a lot of things are not normally distributed. A good number are. I wouldn't make some broad comment that either one is "almost everything".
An interesting example is height, which is pretty "normal" by sex, but if you don't list by sex you get a skew. You could list states by size range as well and find a really skewed distribution because many eastern states are quite small and western states are nearly all larger than any eastern state. The list goes on ... and on, which is why we have statistics.
I probably didn't like statistics, much, back in the day.
