Haven't heard of several of those.  I thought Oprah would be on there, but after looking her up, her $3 bil makes her a pauper relative to these gals.

Well, Oprah has a distinction most of them do not... She earned that ish herself.

I don't recognize all those names, but most of those I do are either the widows of rich dudes or the divorcees of rich dudes.

Yep.  Oprah hustled her way to wealth.  Frankly, from my vantage point, it's hard for me to distinguish the material different between $3 bil and $50 bil.  The obvious snarky answer is $47 bil, but I can't envision how my life my might any different between the two.

Yep. Despite the reputation I like to maintain around here as an elite, I don't REALLY have tastes that are all that expensive.

$3-10M for a nice big house on Lake Mission Viejo, whatever I need to spend for a membership at a country club, and a HELL of a lot of airline flights and hotels to see the world, and I'm pretty well set. I don't even need $1B to fund that for the rest of my life and have a crapload left over to pass down to kids.

Agree.  A paltry $500m would probably get me where I'd like to be and still have plenty leftover.

Lakehouse with a couple of modestly priced boats, and then flights and hotels all over the world for a couple dozen years.

I think $500 mil would allow me to do pretty much anything I wanted for the rest of my life, plus give generously to some charities and religious organizations.

A few decades back, a friend of mine and I figured $20 million would do it.  With that we could do pretty much anything "we" really wanted to do, not counting silliness.

I don't have $20 million today, but I can do whatever we really want to do, so long as I don't go crazy.  If I had more, I'd be looking at giving more away.

I think buying a plane is worse than a boat.  I had shared owndership once and was the Treasurer, so I know how much they cost, even little ones.

Yeah, but if I only had $20M, it would make it hard to justify more than about $3M for the house... That's kinda entry level for lakefront :57:

We figured $20 million in addition to having a place to live, it was "play money", not capital money.

It's probably double that today.  Let's say $50 million in the "bank" and you need say $2 million a year in expenses.  One can get over 3% today on high quality municipal bonds.  Berkshare has an average 11% return.  Maybe split the difference.

Borrow against Berkshire if you need money.  Zero taxes.
