So northwest California gets more rain than southeast Louisiana?  Who knew.

Yep, people are always a little suprised when I tell them we receive between 50-55 inches of rain a year here in the Houston area.

If that's not surprising enough, we actually received (in places) that much rain in a span of 24 hrs during Hurricane Harvey.

Folks are shocked when I say we get more rain here than Seattle does.  We get rain, they get mist.

Is Oregon trying to be a football school?  Sort of nonsensical when you lack any NCs.

Stolen from a Badger board, and yes, F Oregon. Why we have that cancer in our conference is beyond stupid.

OlBadger said... (original post) OK, so I know our interest here is in Badger sports, but we are talking about academic institutions, so I don't want us to forget that academics also count...and trust me, as a former professor, they are a competitive contact sport! Here's how the B1G universities rank on one of the most important academic metrics: research spending. These are federal data for 2023, the last year available, showing national rank and research spending from all sources in $millions (categories are mine following natural break lines):

A-Listers
4 - Michigan, $1,925
5 - Washington, 1,734
6 - Wisconsin, 1,732
7 - UCLA, 1,721

B-Listers
14 - Ohio State, 1,449
18 - Maryland, 1,385
21 - Minnesota, 1,320 (*snicker*)
26 - Penn State, 1,207
28 - USC, 1,155
29 - Northwestern, 1,114 (*chuckle*)

C-Listers
38 - Indiana, 853
40 - Purdue, 845
41 - Michigan State, 844
42 - Rutgers, 832
43 - Illinois, 821 (!)

D-Listers
51 - Iowa, 662 (*double snicker*)
55 - Nebraska, 617

F-Lister
147 - Oregon, 164 (WTF?)'

U RAH RAH! WIS CON SIN!

I wouuldn't conflate "research spending" with "academic excellence" myself, but whatever, it is a quantifiable thing.
