Pinstripe Bowl: Iowa (8-5) vs. Boston College (7-6) Post Game
« on: December 03, 2017, 11:01:03 PM »
Unethusiastically, I will start this thread.
Ferentz hasn't had a bowl win, since after the 2010 season, and it was barely a win, 27-24, over Missouri in the Insight Bowl.
Boston College is a pretty good 7-5 team. It has wins over NIU, Louisville, and a 35-3 drubbing of FSU.
A bowl win was important coming into this season, but I can't say that was the reason Iowa allowed Wisconsin to blacktop them into the cold weather lower-obscurity bowl.

New York is a fun town, especially around New Years. If I didn't have plans to warm my butt in the Bahamas and on Grand Cayman, I might have considered freezing my butt onto a cold plastic seat.

I'd really like to see "bad loss Iowa" drub someone else out of relevancy, BC is the only opportunity you have to that to someone other than my Buckeyes.

Go Hawks.

Maybe this is just marketing, but when I look at what bowls I'm going to watch, I typically look for the number in front of the name and start there, I wonder if ESPN placed their computer ranking, FPI, sargain or whatever rating in front of the game it would garner more interests ?

A lot of Tennis tournaments only rank the top half of the bracket, I bet if ESPN did this it would garner more interests on the top half bowls.

The only thing interesting about Boston College to Iowa fans is that Iowa's former LB coach is now the DC for BC.

When Jim Ried was the LB coach at Iowa back in 2013, all 3 of his stating LB ended up in the NFL.  Also he really helped  mentor Iowa DC Phil Parker and help introduce some innovative schemes like the Raider package.

Of course, given Iowa's predictable offense, Jim Ried probably already has a plan to stop Iowa's offense.

I just hope Iowa's bowl slide stops this season.  BC isn't dog poo, but it's certainly beatable.  I believe Iowa's even a slight favorite out the gate.

That said, Iowa's last 5 bowl trips have not been kind.  Not only have they been all losses, not a single one of them was really competitive (the 2013-14 Outback Bowl was a one-score victory for LSU, but Iowa never threatened them).  The average score was 34-15.  Not good.

Didn't know Ried was the author of the Raider defense, which I haven't seen in 2017. It was effective when Iowa put it to use in past years, and it is confusing to O-Linemen.

Well, I don"t actually know who came up with the Raider package.  I just know that Ried and Parker worked well together and I assumed they were sharing ideas and probably came up with it together.  And yes its gone by 2017, because teams figured out how to exploit it, but it worked great in 2013 at the time.

Jules Yakapovich is the credited author of the "Radar" defense. Which is essentially the same as the "Raider" package Iowa used.  It's been around since the 70's.

I agree w/Fezz that Reid knows our runs schemes well and knows how to defend them. Our route trees have changed (GD --> BF) since the time he was here, though.

Overall, BC is surging. Both their O and D have improved greatly over the last half of the season.

If Iowa can run the ball and defend the run, they'll be in great shape. The exact same thing can be said for BC.

Who would win between a Hawk and a Bald Eagle, within the confines of the Animal Kingdom?

Bald eagle, no question.

But Hawkeyes aren't birds, they're badass sharpshooters during the colonial days (and definitely NOT goofy Army medics in the 1950s)

Oh. Well if the sharpshooters shoot at the Bald Eagles, they will lock them up and throw away the key.

The winner will depend solely upon nonfootball factors, such as, who delivered papers in the freezing cold as children, and whose fingers freeze and splinter into pieces last.
