My "new" car has a wireless phone charging pad in the console. Cool, yeah? No... It freakin' sucks. Completely and totally useless. And that's not just me--looking at online reviews suggests everyone else thinks the same, and generally wireless charging pads in cars just suck in general. With my old phone, it would stop charging after a few minutes and then my phone wouldn't wireless charge again on ANY wireless charger unless I power cycled the phone.

So I ended up turning off the wireless charging and set up a cord. Which worked "fine", but the cord was short [by design] and every time I would disconnect the cord, it would turn off Android Auto. Which again was "fine", considering I shouldn't be looking at the phone in the car. 

I'd seen MagSafe-compatible (or whatever Android calls it) charging pads that sit right on the stock location of the wireless charging pad, but my old phone didn't support MagSafe, so I couldn't use that. 

But now, I ordered one of those since I got the new phone. It arrived yesterday and I installed it first thing this morning before I went to work. It's 3D-printed and designed to perfectly fit that location while looking fairly decent, so it's not some janky aftermarket thing that looks terrible. And going to the office and back, it worked... Phone sat exactly where it was supposed to, charged reliably, and when I pulled into my driveway and pulled it off the charger to open the garage and turn off the Ring alarm, Android Auto stayed fully connected. 

So what made me happy...


  • Etsy. It's nice to have web sites that can support little boutique vendors who are actually selling niche products that will have very small, but very specific, markets.
  • 3D printing. Nobody could afford to manufacture something like this with traditional methods. The setup costs and minimum order quantities would probably make it cost prohibitive. But with 3D printing, all it takes is an idea and some skill. Sure, it's low volume, but like point #1, it's a very small niche market anyway. 
  • MagSafe. I previously had wireless charging in the bedroom for overnight, but all it would take is a slight jostling of the phone on the charger and charging would cease. And in the car, the wireless charging didn't work at all. With MagSafe I don't have to worry about any of that. The magnet keep the charger perfectly aligned with the exact location on the phone that's optimal for charging whether overnight or in the car. Knowing what I do as a EE about how alignment affects efficiency, the geek in me is quite happy about this.

I don't at all understand how wireless charging works.  

My Pixel can probably do it, dunno.  I just use the trusty wall/wire-charger.....every other overnight does the trick.  Set the phone alarm to wake up me, and it slow charges from plug-in to alarm time to extend battery life.  I keep a USB cord in the truck in case I need it, but I hardly ever do.  

I have an electric razor I just bought that charges wirelessly.  It's weird, and it made me wonder if Tesla knew what he was talking about after all.  

Back to the phone in the vehicle.....I don't know if it's the phone or the truck, but Android Auto will NOT disconnect.  There's zero fear of Android Auto disconnecting....I can't make it happen even when I want it to.  In the Pixel's bluetooth settings, I can disconnect the truck.....it will just reconnect immediately.  I can toggle off bluetooth completely.  It will just toggle back on and connect to the truck.  I even un-paired it from the phone side.....lolz, it just re-paired and reconnected.  The only thing that works is shutting off the truck or shutting off the phone.  It's annoying when I'm getting the truck serviced, I'll be sitting in the waiting room my phone, and every time someone in the shop cranks the truck, the phone stops whatever I'm doing with it and starts playing Spotify or whatever through the truck.  I literally can't make it quit.  If I'm listening to anything, I just have to pause it until they kill the truck again, because I can't make it play sound locally.  I believe I made it stop when I un-paired from the truck side....but I'm not gonna go around un-pairing and re-pairing all the time.

Holy Crap that sounds like a sales pitch,now at least we know where you're investing,might have my $$$$ Guy look into this. Thanx For the tip 🤑

My wife bought me these small readers that prop on my nose.  They are amazingly useful to me in my dottage, but the holder is a plastic case that fits on the back of my phone.  So, the inductive recharger I had doesn't work.  The one in the car was very iffy, per above.  I just plug'em in now.

My phone will go red in about 12 hours, I use it a fair bit.  My watch is getting to where it won't last a full day.  Both are Apple somethings.

Mine is new (back in December) and I can go a couple or three days without charging.  My old one (which was about 7 years old) wouldn't last a full day.

When we travel to Europe, I forget to charge my watch, and it usually goes dead about the time we reach our hotel, which isn't a problem of course.  I usally need the phone for the map.

My Garmin watch could easily go a week+ between charges. Less of course depending on how much I use it for tracking walks or golf, but even than it'll go most of a week with daily activity tracking. 

I *think* my wife is getting me a new Garmin Fenix 8 Pro for my birthday to replace my current Fenix 5... Which will make me happy.
