Today, utee94 started an old-fart ranting thread, which, frankly, is right up my alley.  That made me happy.

Our flight to San Diego next week has a dinner option of Fox Bros. short rib (and some other burfle I ignored).  Sign me up.

It's nice Delta is offering Fox Bros. food options I think.

Silly one here: just thinking about SFGopher graduating high school on Saturday, turning 18 on Sunday, and, generally, watching him grow into a man. Nobody's perfect--he's not--but he is a damn good kid, and he's becoming a damn good man.
Yep.  Gigem Jr is 18 and graduates on Thursday.

Today my students promoted to high school.  And thus, my one-year mistake of teaching 8th grade is over.
FUUUUUCK.

Good on you. I'd kill one of them, or myself, if I had to teach 8th graders for a year. I couldn't do it. Kudos to you.

this made me happy yesterday............ sorry for not posting last night when I got back to the hotel at 1:30am
We both had the tasting menu.  The daughter paid for the food, I picked up the wine pairing for $95 each.
We were upgraded a couple times on the wine and a couple times on the menu we had some items added.
Probably the most impressive meal I've had.

There is a restaurant near us where the tasting menu is $250 per, and the wine pairing is $185.

I just can't do it.  Someone said you can sit at the bar and order al a carte, but that would get pricey as well.

it was outstanding but, if I ever go back on my dime or my daughter's, we'll sit at the bar and keep the bill down some.  $600 for two is more than I'm comfortable with.

We also started with oysters and bubbly wine before the tasting

We have done some prix fixe here but not at $250.  Yet.  We've been twice to Bacchanalia which is quite good I think, and is $125 last I checked.

One can hit $125 at "normal pricey restaurants" of course (no alcohol).  Around us, a "good meal" out with no alcohol will be $50 per, that's at a nice place that isn't a "one star" or whatever.  If you want an expensive appetizer or dessert it'll be more of course.  So, add two small appetizers, the main course, and dessert, and you're over $100.

you could stay around the $50 range with the menu - the steaks are impressive for the price.
the Butcher Cut last night was a tomahawk ribeye, 36 oz
I've also purchased the steaks from the market in the same building and grilled them at home

Yeah, I'm a little fancy sometimes, but even when my wife and I go out to Mastro's Ocean Club for special occasions, even with alcohol it usually stays under $400 and that's for a VERY good meal--usually an appetizer or salad, steaks with sides, wine & beer, and sometimes dessert.

We generally avoid prix fixe menus though. Usually there's something on there that we're not as excited about as what we might order for ourselves, so it feels like a bit of a ripoff to be forced into a menu that isn't exactly what we each want for that kind of money.

On the flipside, I've often had items on a tasting menu or omakase that I never would have ordered, and turn out delicious.

My i s c & a aggie wife and I do it about once per year, usually either on her birthday, or our anniversary.
