Lots of people agree that Texans are proud?  It may be fully justified, but I don't think you'll get any argument there.

As for living here, hey, I had to move somewhere where a woman would marry me.  Not my fault that the women of the rest of the Union never found me attractive and Texans are the only ones who would ever date me.

More or less making fun of my 10 year old self for thinking that everybody knows that the Texas flag looks like.

I'd guess that more non-Texans know what the Texas flag looks like, than... say... non-Maine-residents know what the Maine flag looks like.

The autobahn probably provided the overall concept of grade separated interchanges, but the need to better transport was there in 1919.  The original name was "National  and Defense Highways Act".

National Interstate and Defense Highways Act (1956) | National Archives

I was fascinated by all this as a kid, I guess I still am to some degree.
according to Britannica and history.com

Eisenhower’s vision for the Interstate Highway System was actually fueled by two defining travel experiences:

The 1919 Military Convoy: As a young Army officer, Eisenhower spent 62 days traveling cross-country with a motor convoy from Washington, D.C. to San Francisco. The arduous journey proved that America's roads were woefully inadequate for cross-country military or commercial transport.

The German Autobahn (WWII): Decades later, as Supreme Allied Commander, he personally experienced the efficiency of Nazi Germany's Autobahn, which made a lasting impact on his understanding of modern infrastructure and national defense.

"After seeing the autobahns of modern Germany and knowing the asset those highways were to the Germans, I decided, as president, to put an emphasis on this kind of road building."

I know....I'm just messing with ya.

I used to frequently visit the capitol growing up.  Only lived a short drive from it.  Not sure why I wound up going so much.  Sometimes it was school field trips, sometimes my folks would take me.

Anyway, while I always knew what our state flag looked like, I was confused about the whole thing.  In the giant foyer of the LA state capitol hangs all the flags of countries who ever controlled the territory.  There are a lot of them.....I'm thinking 16, but I might not remember that correctly.  I remember being a kid and looking at all those flags, not understanding what they had to do with anything, and not being entirely certain that the flag I thought was our state flag was actually it, because maybe it was one of these other ones.  You know.....the ones hanging in the state capitol.

Of course, as a kid, the coolest thing about that building was looking at the hole in the wall made by the bullet that killed Huey P. Long (before they rushed his brain to a vat in the basement where he still controls things to this day).  Chilling.  Not entirely sure it's a great thing to show kids on an elementary school field trip, but the 80's were the 80's.

I think so, I also think it's mostly OK.  I find Atlantans to be rather excessively proud of things like having a large airport, which is, well, OK, but a bit of an odd thing in which to be proud.  They seize on other things that are "largest", or nearly so, like the aquarium, the once tallest hotel in the world, the largest painting, the large bax relief carving, the worst traffic (probably not quite true), the most streets with Peachtree in the name, the world's largest drivein restaurant, the most strip clubs ...

I suspect Eisenhower wanted to greatly improve our road system after 1919, and the layout of the autobahns gave rise to the criteria required for the interstate system, mainly grade separated interchanges.  I don't know if Germany was the first to build such highways.
