THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

The Bisbee Deportation (1917)
In June 1917, miners in Bisbee, Arizona, engaged in a strike to improve wages and working conditions. On July 12, 2,000 vigilantes organized by the county sheriff illegally deported more than 1,000 of the striking union workers and others, including Americans and immigrants from Mexico and elsewhere. They were brought to a baseball field, loaded onto a cattle train, and taken 16 hours through the desert. They were finally dropped off in Hermanas, New Mexico.

1954 President Eisenhower puts forward a plan for the Interstate Highway System

Immensely great idea.  Really allowed people to get out and see the country - other places, other people.  Even just socially, a huge deal.

Eisenhower was involved in an effort to send military forces from east to west coast.  It didn't go well.

The Road Trip That Inspired the Interstate Highway System | HISTORY

The autobahn probably provided the overall concept of grade separated interchanges, but the need to better transport was there in 1919.  The original name was "National  and Defense Highways Act".

I was fascinated by all this as a kid, I guess I still am to some degree.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

First FIFA World Cup Kicks Off (1930)
Soccer, or association football, as it is known throughout much of the world, has been an Olympic sport since 1900. In 1930, FIFA—soccer's international governing body—decided to stage its own tournament, the World Cup. Reigning Olympic champion Uruguay was chosen as host and went on to win the inaugural event. Today the tournament is one of the most prestigious sporting events in the world, but then it was a challenge just to get teams to participate.

Interstates must also have a straight one mile stretch every so often, in order for planes to be able to land.

It's possible I came across Chile's flag sometime in school, or elsewhere, but back then I wouldn't have known what Texas' flag looked like.
Yeah it's just something somebody noticed in some social studies book.  Like one day "look teach, this flag is almost identical to our Texas Flag!".  Cool.  Ok now class, open your books to page 327.

Also, I was going to call bullshit that you didn't know what Texas Flag looked like, but then I realized that I have no idea what Louisiana's flag is.  I'm pretty sure it has the "saints" emblem on it, but honestly I don't know.  I just assumed that everybody knew what the Texas flag looked like.

We should have an OT thread where we rank the best state flags, like a tournament.  With votes and all.

Welp, I can't post the image here, but 847 nailed it.  I never in my life remember seeing this flag.
