THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Modern, Skimpy Bikini Debuted at Paris Pool Fashion Show (1946)
Although women have worn bikini-like two-piece garments for centuries—mosaics from the 4th century depict women in such garb—the modern bikini was only introduced in 1946. Anticipating that his revealing swimwear design would have an explosive effect on fashion, French engineer Louis Réard named his skimpy suit after the Bikini atoll in the central Pacific, where US nuclear testing had just begun. However, he struggled to find a model to debut his G-string bikini.

I thought it a bit odd that the battle was celebrated

real bird reenactment
Not much into reanactment but IMHO that would be a waste of time. The battle was too mobile, chaotic, strung out and expansive to focus in all the places.Much better walking the battle field tour

My cousin's husband is a CW reenactor and the unit he is involveld with were extras in "Gettysburg".Not sure they got a cent, but not like a big role either but they have bragging rights

Damn that's revealing today - a scandalous femme fatale back then. And she has the shape to pull it off

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Jan Hus Is Burned at the Stake (1415)
A Bohemian religious reformer, Hus was excommunicated in 1411 after taking a stand in the power struggle among the three figures claiming to be pope of the Catholic Church. He continued to preach, but his criticism led to a case of heresy against him, and he was invited to the Council of Constance to explain his views. Though promised safe conduct to the council, he was arrested, tried for heresy, and burned at the stake.

most people don't know who Jan Hus was, but he is one of my favorite figures from church history. One of his big "heresies" was that the mass should be in the vernacular so they people could understand. It took the Catholic church another 550 years with Vatican II to accept that idea.

"Tried for heresy" is a generous way of putting that.  While not quite a transcript, we have pretty detailed records of the proceeding.  Kept by his opponents, so it's not as if they've been whitewashed.  The fix was in, he was "guilty" before he ever arrived.  They had no intention of doing anything but executing him.

It's a pretty harrowing, and sad, account.
