June 8, 1849 - George Winslow, who had been traveling along the Oregon Trail, died in what is now Jefferson County, Nebraska on June 8, 1849.

Winslow had joined an expedition from Massachusetts to the gold fields in California but contracted cholera along the way. A marker was placed at his grave site near Fairbury.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Secretariat Wins the Triple Crown (1973)
Thoroughbred racehorse Secretariat was the first US Triple Crown champion in 25 years, setting records in the Kentucky Derby and Belmont Stakes that still stand today. In fact, in the 40 years since, only one Derby winner has even come close to matching Secretariat's time of 1:59.40. Secretariat advanced from last to first to win the Preakness and won the Belmont Stakes by an unprecedented 31 lengths.

Hermann Göring grew up in a medieval castle in Austria owned by a half-Jewish man named Hermann von Epenstein, who was simultaneously his godfather AND his mother's open lover for 15 years. While the affair played out in the castle's upper floors, Göring's own father, a retired quietly moved to a separate cottage on the grounds. Nobody seemed to discuss it. The boy grew up in the castle, calling Epenstein his second father, hunting the grounds, absorbing the aristocratic life.

That shaped everything that came after.

At 18 he enrolled in military school. By the time WWI broke out he had transferred to the air corps and was flying combat missions over the Western Front. He finished the war with 22 confirmed kills and was given command of Jagdgeschwader 1, the celebrated fighter wing previously led by Manfred von Richthofen, the Red Baron, the most feared pilot in history. Göring was the man chosen to carry that legacy forward. He wore the Pour le Mérite, Germany's highest military honor, around his neck.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

The Le Mans Disaster (1955)
The legendary 24 Hours of Le Mans motor race was created in 1923, when cars' top speeds hovered around 60 mph (97 km/h). Thirty years later, top speeds had more than tripled, with little change to the course. In the 1955 race, a narrow pass near the pit stop caused racer Pierre Levegh to hit another car from behind while traveling at about 150 mph (240 km/h). Levegh's Mercedes went airborne, and parts flew into the stands, killing Levegh and more than 80 spectators.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

The Armagh Rail Disaster (1889)
In 1889, a Sunday school train excursion in Armagh, Ireland, turned tragic when the train stalled while climbing a steep hill. The crew decoupled the cars, intending to climb the hill with the first few cars and then pull the remaining cars separately, but the back section had insufficient brakes and rolled down into an oncoming train. At least 78 people were killed in the crash, including many children.

June 12, 1917 - A celebration for the fiftieth anniversary of Nebraska being admitted into the Union happened in Lincoln from June 12 through June 14, 1917.

It featured an address by former President Theodore Roosevelt.

Roosevelt wasn’t the only federal official to celebrate with Nebraskans.

An early celebration in Omaha the previous October was attended by President and Mrs. Woodrow Wilson.
