THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

First Self-Sustaining Nuclear Chain Reaction Is Demonstrated (1942)
Constructed under an abandoned stand of bleachers at the University of Chicago, the world's first artificial nuclear reactor was little more than a pile of uranium and graphite bricks. It was built as part of the Manhattan Project under the supervision of renowned physicist Enrico Fermi. The first successful demonstration lasted 28 minutes and was a milestone in the history of physics.

Floyd Collins and the Crystal Cave

Collins was a caver noted for discovering Kentucky's Crystal Cave in 1917. Eight years later, while searching for a new entrance to a popular cave system, he became trapped underground. He died after about two weeks, just days before a rescue shaft reached his location. The rescue quickly became the third biggest media event of the period, the first and second being Charles Lindbergh's transatlantic flight and his son's kidnapping. Coincidently, Lindbergh played a role in the rescue,

On this date in 1950 ~ In the Chosin/Changjin Reservoir Area, 1st Marine Division elements began the fighting withdrawal from Yudam-ni to Hagaru-ri. The subzero weather earned the area the title “Frozen Chosin” from the Marines and soldiers who fought there.

All-timer.  I was in love with Beverly Deangelo all thru the 80's/90's, but man she didn't age well at all.  Her voice sounds like she smoked two packs of camels a day.

Yes, 40 years ago today, on December 2, 1985, the Miami Dolphins defeated the Chicago Bears 38-24, ending the Bears' 12-0 undefeated streak. The game took place on Monday Night Football and was a pivotal moment for the Bears, who had been aiming for a perfect season but regrouped to win their remaining games and ultimately a Super Bowl.
The game: The Dolphins jumped out to a large lead, holding a 31-10 advantage at halftime thanks to a strong offensive performance led by quarterback Dan Marino.
Dolphins' strategy: Miami's game plan focused on exploiting weaknesses in the Bears' defense and using Marino's quick release to counter the pass rush.
Bears' aftermath: The loss was the only blemish on their season. After the defeat, the Bears won their next six games and went on to win Super Bowl XX.
Historical significance: The 1985 Bears were one of the most dominant teams in NFL history. The loss prevented them from achieving the first undefeated season since the 1972 Miami Dolphins, who were in attendance to watch the game.

She probably did.

Carrie Fisher destroyed her voice with cigarettes and drugs, as well.  It was really tough listening to her in the Star Wars sequels.

Florida's passing stats:::

Rallying from a 10-0 deficit, Nebraska scored three times in the fourth quarter to defeat the Florida Gators 13-10.

From the very start, it was an uphill climb for the Huskers. Florida scored once in the first quarter and kicked a field goal in the second, while holding Nebraska’s usually strong offense to 138 total yards.

But in the second half, fullback Tony Davis, quarterback Terry Luck, kicker Mike Coyle and the Black Shirt defense led NU to victory, though it wasn’t until the fourth quarter when the Huskers really got rolling. Freshman I-back Monte Anthony scored the Huskers’ touchdown with 13:24 left in the game, when he ran up the middle for two yards to cap a 99-yard drive that followed a goal-line stand, and the Huskers trailed 10-7.

Davis set up Coyle’s two deciding field goals with inspired running as he picked up 126 yards on 17 carries. Coyle tied the score on a 37-yard boot with 7:13 left, and with 1:46 remaining, his 39-yard kick gave NU its sixth consecutive bowl win.

Full recap here.

H’MAX NOTES: This was the last Sugar Bowl game played in Tulane Stadium.  … Nebraska’s 99-yard drive featured zero passes and came after Terry Luck replaced Dave Humm at quarterback. … Tony Davis rushed for 126 yards and was named Outstanding Player of the game.
