OFFUTT AIR FORCE BASE, Neb. — Aug. 6 marks the 80th anniversary of the atomic bombing of Hiroshima.

Did you know the planes that dropped the bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki were made at Nebraska's own Offutt Air Force Base?

KETV NewsWatch 7 dug into our archives to revisit the building that helped write history.

See the full story in the video above.

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:
Gertrude Ederle Becomes First Woman to Swim across the English Channel (1926)
Only five men had managed to swim across the 35-mile (56-km) English Channel by the time Ederle became the first woman to make the trip. On her second attempt, the 19-year-old Olympic medalist from America made the swim from France to England in 14 hours and 31 minutes—beating the male record-holder by two hours. Hours before Ederle reached England, the weather deteriorated. A supporter following her by boat called out and urged her to get out of the water.

The Enola Gay was manufactured at the Glenn L. Martin Company's bomber plant in Bellevue, Nebraska, located at Offutt Field (now Offutt Air Force Base), according to WikipediaSpecifically, it was one of the first fifteen B-29s built to the "Silverplate" specification, designed for nuclear weapon delivery. The plant, initially focused on B-26 Marauders, later shifted to producing B-29 Superfortresses, including the Enola Gay.

Manhatton Project: RUSH

Imagine a time
When it all began
In the dying days of a war
A weapon — that would settle the score
Whoever found it first
Would be sure to do their worst —
They always had before…

Imagine a man
Where it all began
A scientist pacing the floor
In each nation — always eager to explore
To build the best big stick
To turn the winning trick —
But this was something more…

The big bang — took and shook the world
Shot down the rising sun
The end was begun — it would hit everyone
When the chain reaction was done
The big shots — try to hold it back
Fools try to wish it away
The hopeful depend on a world without end
Whatever the hopeless may say

Imagine a place
Where it all began
They gathered from across the land
To work in the secrecy of the desert sand
All of the brightest boys
To play with the biggest toys —
More than they bargained for…

Imagine a man
When it all began
The pilot of “Enola Gay”
Flying out of the shockwave
On that August day
All the powers that be
And the course of history,
Would be changed for evermore…

THIS DAY IN HISTORY:

Federal Emergency Declared at Love Canal in New York (1978)
In the 1940s and 50s, an abandoned canal in Niagara Falls, New York, became a dumping ground for chemical waste. It was later filled in, and after the land was given to the city of Niagara Falls by the chemical company, houses and an elementary school were built there. By the late 1970s, toxic chemicals had risen to the surface, and residents were found to have a high incidence of chromosome damage. A federal emergency was declared in 1978, and residents were evacuated.

Daniel Inouye's Insane Medal of Honor Story
All while his family was imprisoned in Arkansas, thousands of miles from their home in Hawaii.
talk about love of country: the men of the 442nd put it all on the line. “Go for broke” was their motto, and they did.
From Wikipedia:
“The combined units earned, in less than two years, more than 4,000 Purple Hearts and 4,000 Bronze Star Medals. The unit was awarded seven Presidential Unit Citations(seven between 1944 and 1946,[[/iurl]five earned in one month). Twenty-one of its members were awarded the Medal of Honor.”
