One reason the US does not have universal health care is the very high marginal tax rates back then.  This could be the main reason.  The top marginal rate was 90%.

So, companies vied to offer other "benefits" which they could deduct and the salaryman got them tax free, one of these was health insurance.  Companies started offering it, it was a nice tax free perk, the company could write it off.  So, now we have company-based health insurance for a lot of people.

I've read that part of it was also due to wage and price controls implemented during WWII.  If your company couldn't increase your salary but wanted to keep you they could add perks like healthcare.

My mom was anti-TV in a big way, and we listened to a fair amount of serialized, old-school radio. The Shadow as a pretty good program, even to my 1980s childhood ears. Haven't heard it since then. I should look it up on Spotify and see if it really was any good, or just my only option.

Henry Hudson Discovers Hudson Bay (1610)
After several failed attempts to find a northeast passage to Asia, Hudson, a veteran sea captain, sailed west and began probing N America to find a way through it by ship. In 1610, he discovered Hudson Bay but lingered too long and became trapped there by winter ice. When the weather warmed, Hudson wanted to continue exploring, but his starved and diseased crew refused. They mutinied and set Hudson, his son, and a few others adrift in a small boat without food or water.
