We were at a local steakhouse last night that has a "vibe" and was playing some good tunes.  They have a "social hour" we enjoy, without being overly social, but they have some decent prices then, as opposed to later when their prices are ... indecent IMHO.

I often ask my wife if she knows some old rock tune, often she does, and then with purely US bands she won't.

i actually hated that part in the new one. why is Superman saving a freaking squirrel from a weird giant cheap CGI Japanese godzilla knock off monster. seriously? and superman doesn't even defeat the weird giant cheap CGI Japanese godzilla knock off monster- his buddies do. also: why is he constantly needing help/saving....ummm isn't he like a super god man? kinda crazy that as shitty as Zack Snyder is (and he is a very shitty film maker) both of his Superman movies will probably do considerably more at the box office than this new one.

Warner Brothers Discovery was probably banking on this new Superman doing $1 billion at the global box office to consider it a hit, and well it's not going to get anywhere close to that. Budget on a movie like that has to cost $200-250 million and you can add another $200-250 million in promotion on top of that. You're talking about a nut of $400-500 million. And they only get a heavy majority of box office split in the first 2 weeks, after that split usually goes down drastically on a sliding scale from week 3 to 4 and so on. And with the complete inability to monetize an at home video business and sell VHS/DVD/Bluray anymore as everyone just streams shit now- they are probably starring a sizable loss in the face with this new one. Which isn't great news for a company that saw it's revenue decline 5% YoY and had a loss of $11.5 billion last year.

It has made $500M globally since opening, including being split with FF and other movies this past weekend.

If your assertions above are correct about its cost and marketing budget, then it's already at least breaking even and will by no means be a "sizeable loss."

I get it, you didn't like the movie.  Lots of other people did.  It's 83% fresh on RT and 91% popcornometer.  Those numbers are almost identical to Avengers Infinity War.  It will make money for the studio.  They will make more of these movies and I'm excited to see what James Gunn can do with the DCU.

No, I liked the movie. I never said I didn't like it. I wanted to absolutely love it and didn't- but that could be also my fault- maybe I had too high of expectations for it. Reporting in Forbes said the movie will need to hit around $600-675 million to break even- and imo it's probably nearing the end of it's life cycle as movies now days make all of their money in the first 3-4 weeks and after that just fall off a cliff. Almost none have any staying power at the box office anymore. could just be our society these days- we just move from one thing to the next super fast. could also be the cost of going to the movies has gotten insane. family of 4 on opening weekend- buying all the popcorn & candies & sodas & snacks- you're looking at $150+. 

There might also be some "superhero fatigue" going around as well- seems like the last 20 years there have been nothing but huge budget super hero movies and reboots of the same super hero franchises. US movie studios are in real trouble imo. 

Beyond that, though, I agree that movies are so expensive now that many people who might otherwise go see them in the theaters, no longer do.

Personally I go to see 4-5 movies per year in the theater.  It used to be a lot more than that, but with prices as they now are, and paying for 4 people every time, rather than just 1 or 2, I limit myself to seeing only the really big movies at the theater.  The kind of special effects blockbusters that really are just so much better on the big screen.

So far this year I've seen F1 and Superman at the theater.  I'll probably go see Fantastic Four, and then later in the fall, Wicked 2.  That will likely be it, for this calendar year.

There might also be some "superhero fatigue" going around as well- 

FFS ..... I hope so.  The superhero act played out about 15 years ago.

I think Top Gun Maverick may have been my last trip to the theater.

I love the movie theater experience, there's just nothing worth a damn to go see.

Also, was telling my Gen Z son this --- I don't see movie tailers on TV near to the extent I used to.  Good advertising gets butts in seats, but I don't don't see them often anymore.  Is this just me?  If so, is it the straight to streaming services effect?
