I'm going with the Seminoles here.

I think I said this last time this Nebraska team was under consideration but I believe that 1996 Nebraska is somewhat overrated based on chronological proximity to really great Nebraska teams that won NC's in 1994, 1995, and 1997. The 1996 team was not the equal of those.

1996 Nebraska lost badly to a team that finished #4 and by 10 to a team that finished 8-5 and barely ranked. 1991 FSU lost by a combined six points to that year's NC and a team that finished #7.

I went FSU, but by mid-season the 96 Huskers were very close to the 97 team

starting a new QB in Tempe and being very overconfident was a disaster
the Longhorn upset is unexplained unless you believe in which-craft and curses

'96 Longhorns were an extremely talented team, but just had very... "uneven"... coaching.  Priest Holmes and Ricky Williams in the same backfield, that's no joke.

Mackovic got that B12 CCG right. He got a lot of other things wrong.

the 4th down pass was right because it worked

Outgaining the Huskers 503 yards to 398 yards is what worked.

It was a decent percentage of 100 yards, for sure.

And I'm not saying that 96 Texas was most assuredly better than 96 NU (despite the H2H win), I'm just saying that nobody should be surprised that a team as talented as 96 Texas could win that game, as long as the coaches did a better-than-usual job.  Which they did.

As you say, the 96 Huskers were firing on all cylinders by the end of the year, and Texas still managed to beat them.  That was a seriously talented Texas team that, every now and then, had some not-horrible coaching to go alongside.

Yes, everyone should be surprised when a 7-4 team beats a 10-1 team, especially when it's for a conference title and a possible NC.

I'm certain Osborne tried to get the message across to his players that Texas was very talented and capable of beating them.  I doubt they listened

The team in Tempe earlier in the season was talented as well, going on to finish #4 after giving the Buckeyes all they wanted in the Rose.  But, ranked #17 to begin the season

People who don't understand nuance or matchups are certainly surprised when such things happen.  People who only approach things superficially are surprised when such things happen. Stupid people are surprised when such things happen.

I'm trying not to assume that EVERYONE is stupid.   Although perhaps that's just wishful thinking...

well, there's a large number of UT-Austin graduates out wandering about

they can't ALL be stupid, but many Aggies might disagree
