OT This year's flu
« on: February 04, 2025, 12:03:18 PM »
Without getting into the conversation about vaccines, I just wanted to share a brief story of gratitude, thankfulness and caution about this year’s flu. 10 days ago, my 2 year old son, woke up from his nap with a 102.2 fever and a red face. He definitely was quiet, not feeling great, not eating much.  We have a 5 week old as well and my wife was feeding her on the couch, while our 2 year old was on the opposite end of the couch watching Mickey Mouse on Disney. He was leaning over and we thought he was going to nap, but thankfully my wife, the surgical nurse noticed something was off and called his name twice. He didn’t respond so she yelled at me to come over quickly from the cooking in the kitchen. I lifted his head up, he was completely limp and his eyes rolled to the back of his head. He started acting like he was choking so we called 911 immediately got a dechoker, but his jaw was locked tight. After about 30 seconds, we got his mouth open for the dechoker.. Nothing was blocking his airway. He turned completely blue/purple so my wife had to put him on the ground and start CPR because he wasn’t breathing and we didn’t feel a pulse. Three rounds of CPR and during the second one, I had to run to the closet to get the AED we keep in the house. After the third round, he started breathing very slightly and fighting it a little as the EMS rushed in the house. They jumped in, AED, epi followed by versed.  Got him stable enough to transport. During transport had to intubate, start two IVs, but they got him to the hospital. Once there, they were able to do ct scan and didn’t see any brain damage nor serious heart damage, but believed he needed to be life flighted down to Rainbow babies.. which they did. Rainbow babies did their thing, got him stable and improving and did lots of tests, but kept him with us when we thought we were losing him.

They don’t know for sure what caused such a serious event, but the combination of Flu A, Flu Myositis and a febrile seizure and the commentary from all the doctors including neurologists was that this year’s flu is wreaking havoc to all ages, especially children. I think part of this is just helping to say what happened to deal with the shock, but part of it is just sharing how bad the flu is and everyone taking extra precautions could possibly help just one person avoid an event like this is worth it. So especially if you have kids, be smart with food, sleep and washing hands this year. If there’s a fever, please keep a close eye on them this year.

Holy $#!+ man!

All I can say is that as a fellow father, I can't even begin to imagine. When this all passes, try to make sure you take the time to unpack it emotionally, whatever it takes.

Godspeed, brother.

I'm so glad that you were able to act quickly and get him recovered!  I can't even imagine the terror you must have felt.

Truly, the best wishes on a full recovery for your son.

You're having quite the year, stay healthy!

Very scary.  You handled it well.  I hope your son recovers soon.  Kids' immune systems are pretty tough once it gets ahold of the bug.  Good luck!

Thanks for the kind feedback everyone. All the credit goes to my badass wife. She's the reason he's still here. Was discharged a few days ago and he honestly seems like he went through nothing and completely normal. We are getting an MRI done just to ensure there was no genetic issues with my brain tumors i faced. Outside of a little bruising from the CPR, the kid is running around like a maniac and nothing happened.

We also just heard our friends in Cali that have an 18 month old had a similar episode that landed them in the hospital too. Luckily their son didn't stop breathing, but he did also have a seizure that lasted 5 mins.. Also sad. Going through any serious medical event with a young child is probably one of the worst things to experience.

I was going to ask if there was any seizure activity involved, because that would've been my uneducated guess, but it sounds like they gave you the answer to that.

Y'all handled that like champs.....good thing both of you were ready and knew what to do.  Probably saved his life.

So glad he's doing better now.  Hate y'all had to go through that, but this sounds like the best outcome from a horrifying situation.

If it helps.....one of my best friends has a daughter who went into seizure activity when she was just a little older than your son, and it was very much like what you described here.  That was over 10 years ago, and she's never had another event like that again.  Hopefully your son never will either.

Thank you!! the tough part is that they "believe" it was a very complicated febrile seizure, but not a 100%. At this point, we are holding onto hope that's what it was and there's a clean MRI showing nothing. CT scan was clean so that's a start and they did EEG monitoring for 12 hours, which is essentially monitoring electrical activity of the brain and that was clean.

Febrile seizures are somewhat common and tend to disappear by the time they are 5 or 6 so hopefully it was just the unlucky part of serious flu, flu complications and a seizure all happening together. Only downside to that would be once a febrile seizure happens, they are more likely to have them for a period of time.

Either way, we've had some moments after the shock has worn off to talk through and relive what happened and we truly thought we were losing him and we are very very grateful this has been the outcome.
